I have always wanted a 35 whelen but never seem to be able to find what I want when I have the cash. A ruger would be at the top of my list. I like the history behind it, just a cool round. So the thought of just building one comes to mind. So just for fun I thought I'd check what kind of input you guys have. Nothing serious, just a hunting gun, that in all reality I have no use for! Just a want

Action?
Barrel profile? Twist?
Stock?
35 Whelen improved?

I'm thinking a Ruger or Winchester action. Bartlien 2 or 3 barrel, no sights. Mcmillian sporter style stock.

What do you think?

I just built a 35 Whelen AI on a new Tikka T3X Light. I went with a 24" stainless Mcgowen barrel with a radial muzzle brake. The contour I got (savage magnum taper) is much heavier than what I should have used, so I needed to inlet the factory tikka stock. The added weight and brake helped reduce recoil to a very manageable level. I topped it off with a Burris fullfield iv 3-12x42.

I went with AI for ease of reloading (less trimming), but I don't think I'd do it again with the extra cost associated with dies, custom reamers, headspacing gauges, etc.

I have 180gr barnes TTSX, 200gr Interlock spire point and 200gr FTX bullets to work loads up for once I'm done fire forming brass.

Well you could sell me the barrel and do another in the standard 35 whelen!

I just built one on a Mauser 98 action (1917 DWM). 21" shilen #5. Wisner 3 position model 70 safety. Bedded it into an old fiberglass stock I bought on gunbroker. Shoots great and is a real thumper! Just waiting on my dead air primal so I can thump in peace and quiet.

Yup, the Ruger is a good choice in 35 Whelen. Mine shoots just fine. Trying the 225 tsx in it soon as the 220 Speer it usually eats is discontinued. As to stocks, I have the walnut stock on it. I also have a synthetic stock for it. Running a 3-9x Burris on top. I'd go 12" twist as it'll help with stabilizing the longer pills, especially mono's.

I rebarreled a savage 110 in 30-06 to a 35 whelen. https://www.eabco.net/Shaw-Barrel-f...len-114-Stainless-Magnum-Contour_p_18366.html
Using this shaw barrel and hogue stock. (not sure if they still supply headspace gauges, but if not you can borrow mine). Wont win any beauty pagents. But it shoots and was cheap as far as projects go.

Have a load with H4895 and barnes 200ttsx at 2800fps and cfe 223 with 250 nosler partition at 2680fps. Both are at/below MOA. Have shot sub MOA with the barnes load well beyond 500 yards. If looking for best value, i highly recommend. Got my biggest mule deer in eagles nest wilderness in CO during 2nd rifle a few years ago at 325 yds.
