.338 bullets weight/distance?

Across a broad spectrum of cartridges from the .338 Winchester magnum to the 338 Lapua Improved, at what point in the distance/velocity relationship does the 250 grain bullet become superior to the lighter 200 grain bullet when used for hunting? Flippant answers not appreciated as much as scientific/intelligent ones.
