It's been a few months at least since I posted 1 or 2 threads on trimming my rifle battery down to a useable bare minimum. Lots of good replies in those threads, every one appreciated.
Thought I might give a brief and final update.
# 1: The Savage 110 is a very accurate .243 Win for Varmints. Flat shooting out to considerable distances, not exactly pelt friendly but with all too common reports of DRT, my personal goal at the reloading bench. Not to mention a good starter rifle for younger aspirations. Much to like.
# 2: The all-around workhorse is a .270 Win in a 24" Vanguard. After looking hard at the Creedmoors, 7mm-08, .308 etc., the "old timer" .270 Win ballistics hang with or excel over all the wannabes. :cool: With good bullets, great external ballistics and proper placement, one can expect above average terminal ballistics on an almost endless variety of game, here and abroad, all with reasonable recoil. Much to like.
#3: For heavier chores inside 300 yards, the Tikka 30-06 gets the nod with either a 180 gr or 200 gr bonded bullet, long proven BG getters around the globe. I'm putting my faith (and $) in Shoemaker and all those countless stories and reviews.
Those of you a lot younger than this older soul, YMMV. Take your time and savor every rifle giving you truly memorable experiences.
