Im looking for input on best performing powder for .270 WSM using 150gr Berger VLDH. I've read a lot of info using anything from H4350 to Retumbo. I have these powders along with H4831SC, H1000 and IMR4451. Really don't want to purchase any more, just need a place start like going fast or slower powders. Thanks in advance for replies.

Dosh, dont know if it helps but I shot H1000 in a 7wsm with the 168 vld and it was a tack driver but I ran into problems in the heat with it, I shoot 25 in it now but it seems to like that medium slow powder, I am trying to get some 872 to run in it but it seems to slow

I would try the slower powders either H1000 or Retumbo if you are going for speed, and for accuracy I would try H4350. You can find the data on the Hodgdon web site. I am having very good luck with IMR-7977. This an example of how well my gun shot with the 150 VLD Bergers and IMR-7977. H1000 is close to this powder in burn rate and it should work well in the 270WSM.

I used IMR 4350 in my load a while back and got 1/3moa accuracy at about 3050fps if memory serves

Reloader 26 is awesome and is stable enough that you will never know the difference unless you hunt with a magneto speed strapped on your barrel. The difference is minimal that you would see , it's a 270 wsm !! You are not shooting to 1000 yards with it? Avereage hunting distances you won't see any change. I've used it For a few years now in northern Canada from + to - temps and never had an issue.
But if you don't want to buy more go with the H1000 it's a great powder with 150 grn bullets

Thanks all for the input. Will probably try H4831SC and definitely H1000. Going to get the brass next week and start one loads.

Dosh. 270 WSM is one of my favorite hunting rifles but it is worth stepping up to a 1:8 twist barrel if possible. I have every confidence taking a 1000 yd shot on deer with 170gr EOL or 150gr LRAB, but an 8 twist is required to achieve the required/advertised BC with these two bullets. I prefer Retumbo for my 170gr and 150gr loads although IMR 4350 has produced some very accurate loads for me with 150gr, just can't achieve the same velocity as Retumbo or H1000. It has been easier to achieve accurate loads with 140gr and 150gr bullets with the IMR4350 in the 270 WSM, for me, than any other powder I've tried. Since I do use this round for 1000 yard shots on deer I push the heavy bullets at higher speeds with the slower burning powders. Practically no recoil while delivering 1400ft-lbs of energy at 1000 yards (170gr EOL at 3050 fps, U5.3 mils, sighted in at 300 yards) IMG_2089.JPG

Dosh,
Please email us at [email protected] so we can send you the published data we have for the 270 WSM and our 150gr VLD bullet. H4350 , H-1000 and RETUMBO are called out in our data. Here is some other information you will need also :http://www.bergerbullets.com/vld-making-shoot/ .
