What is a better hunting caliber the 260 Rem or the 6.5-06?

Thanks for the info and I will talk to my son in law. It may be a few months in the process but we would be very interested in renting the reamer if he went that way and from what you describe it sounds like a great setup. Thanks again.

You are very welcome. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help......Rich

late chime in i agree with chuck hawks - if the 6.5 06 was available before the 270 win. and 25 06 they may have never been. WITH THAT im a 270 win. hunter and my next hunting rifle will be a 25 06.

Probably true and would have made a lot of sense, but isn't it great to have Sooooo many choices!:D.......Rich

Below are the groups from my 6.5-06. I'd definetly say "this is the load." I'm shooting SIE 142grn SMKs w/H4831SC going at 3100fps. The drop at 800 yards is only 15MOA.

26" barrel. Not planning on hunting big game w/SMK's. I will be doing some long range prarie dog hunting with the 142 SMK's though...should be interesting!

both are great calibers... I have thought of getting a 6.5-06 just because it have a little more knock down at distance...

I'd say .280 Rem, or better yet 280ai, is superior to either in almost every way. Develop great loads yourself and if you are in a bind, 280 Rem can be used right off the shelf. In that way I think it would be superior to the 6.5-06, which would be my choice of the two listed...

agree on the 280 or 280AI, especially the number of bullet choices from 100 to 190 grains...

Bullet choices are not as good (no A-max, etc...) but even the old 270 Winchester is a great cartridge and possibly easier on the barrel than the 6.5-06. I guess what I'm saying is I'd go with 260 Rem or something else like 270 / 280 / 280 AI...

I sold a 270 to buy my long-range .308 but I have so much ammo and brass I'm thinking of a 270 barrel some day soon...

Ok, did you mean the 280? Because the 260 is basically a 308 necked down to 6.5 therefore, for distance the 6.5-06 should be a whole lot better for long range. They are both great calibers just the 6.5-06 has not taken off like the 260 (6.5-08).

Pac Nor has a 260 AI reamer, I built one with 26" of barrel I have no problem getting 3000FPS from this little tack driver. Best of both worlds.
Think about an AI in 260.....

The 6.5-284 has been an unattractive caliber to me because of big powder charges and short barrel life (reportedly ~ 1200 rounds or a bit more) and I fear the 6.5-06 might suffer the same thing. That's why for me if it was a 6.5 it would be either a 260/260AI or a larger caliber such as 7mm08/284 win/280/280AI with straight 284 Win being my favorite...

Read about the straight 284 over at 6mmbr.com they are very impressed by it..
