25x280AI would it work?

The big thing that can cause problems is the length of the cases and chamber.
The 25-06 Rem. was made using 2.494 30-06 case length. The 280 Rem, is 2.540 same as 270 Win. case length. There is .046 difference between the 25-06 Rem. and the 280 Rem. case. A .046 carbon ring could be a problem.

You may need to check your figures and decide what case length you want to use.

Been there done that. I had a carbon ring problem years ago, When I necked some reworked Mil. 30-06 to 270 Win. The necks got crunched in vice and went in the junk brass can.

Good information. I'm throwing around the idea of either a 25-06AI or 25x280AI. I won't be trying to use 30-06 in the 25x280AI as the parent case.

The main reason I'm thinking about a 25x280AI is to exploit the possibility of simply necking down 280ai brass in a standard 280ai bushing die to hold a 25cal 135gr bullet without having to blow a case out to a 40° shoulder.

The base on the 280AI is the same in a lot of rifles. So just about any rifle 25/06, 270,7mm 280, 30/06 actions are long actions. So they can be converted. In the 700 Rem with letter number of A.B, and C are good actions. D's and above it's my understanding not so good. Long enough to handle the case. One of the reason I like the 700 action is TriggerTeck triggers. You can get that trigger in almost anyway you want. You can find those action in a lot of pond shops. I have come across here as of lately that the reamer cutter should match the number of barrel lands.

What bullets are you planning on using? I am building mine around the Berger 133gr Elite Hunter and 135gr LRHT with a 26" 7 twist barrel.
Excellent choice on your barrel twist. My .257 WBY has a 1:7" (mine is only 24" because I want the option for a suppressor) to primarily propel the heavies. I was set for the 131s, and the 133s/135s until another shared a source for the 145s from Black Hole Bullets.

G7=.371, COAL=1.44X

As seen below, CBTO touching the lands is 2.848" (average of 5) and COAL of 3.441"; I plan on starting at .020" off the lands as my baseline. I have plenty of magazine clearance.

Good luck with your project build.

There was a gunsmith Chuck Wilcox, Shop in Pike WV. Back in the 1970's, Built a Wildcat 25-06 ????. It was actually built on the 270 Win./ 280 rem. length case, He liked the 270 Win. case for its longer neck to neck down. He made a version with Ackley Imp. features, Little body taper, Steep shoulder. He was killed in a freak accident years ago, His shop is gone.

As a Wild Life Officer, I got involved with one of these 25-270 chambered rifles when it got a 308 Win. shell fired in it. Long Story.

So what does a 308 win round do to a 25-270win improved chamber/firearm?

I would like an update in this beast when it's up and running, should be awesome!

I don't see the gain in 25/06 or 270 or 30/06 cases. They are the same except for the caliber. The action are the same length also. Now it you go to AI chamber there's an add. 280AI is greater add to length to the shoulder. Now if you are using a 6mm Rem or 243, a 260 Rem, or 308 case they are all short action. that's a different story. Now if you are going to .243 with the 06 cases then that's a gain also. Myself I am going to 280AI cases and chambering to a different caliber and towards the smaller calibers. Next build will be I think a .257x280AI chamber.

The gentleman was referring to a time where someone loaded a 308win cartridge into a rifle chambered in 25-06rem.

How did they get the bolt closed. .257 to .308 doesn't work. The only thing I see is either the 25/06 length compared to the 308 case that maybe the 308 would chamber being is shorter. but other than that I don't see it. I am probable wrong. So maybe I will learn something.
