243 & 1-9.25\" barrel twist at long range????

I have decided against the wildcat 6-06mm as a long range caliber as it involves too much in terms of case preparation and loads based on "other similar" cailbers leaves me to questions my own abilities. So i have decided on a Savage FV in either the 243 or the 308 as a mid range killer for varmint/predators.

My question is the 1-9.25" twist good enough to stabilize the longer bullets used for LR shooting?

It should work fine all the way up to 105gr. But with that being said I cannot get my 6mm Rem to group at 100 yards with anything over 80gr and it has a 1 in 9 1/8 twist.

The longer bullets require a faster twist rate to shoot really well. These are the 100 grain alloy bullets like the grand slam and the 105 grAmax, 107gr SMK, and 115gr Lapua(?). Hornady recommends a 1:8 twist or faster for the A-max. To get it to shoot out of a 1:9.125 and not precess or tumble you would to to load higher than normal velocities for a .243 or 6mm.

I tried them in my Rem 700 and got 1.5 moa out of them but didn't push velocities past recommended loads. The gun & I can shoot .3 moa with lighter bullets.

FWIW, the 55-70 grain ballistic tips (70 gr my fav), Vmax and Speer TNT work quite well. I use the 70 gr Noslers out at 500 yards. They also have a 80 gr ballistic tip for varmints but I haven't developed a better load than my 70 gr perform so haven't used them except in testing.

Looks like your gun likes the same bullets as mine Carl. The 70gr BT shoot the best out of my 1-9.125 twist. I have had poor results with anything over 85gr.

Try the 105 amax, they shot great for me and Bill Bailey. Will give you definate preformance out to 1200yds I would guess.

good luck

Hey guy ,

AI that thing ,use lapua brass , get your bbl with a 8 or 7 twist ( mine is a Schnieder 7.5 ) and shoot the 107 smks . You will love the results and the fireforming load s are extremely accurate
