220 ELD-X for 300 WBY

I'd look at rl22, rl25, 7828, etc... I load 225 hdy hpbt's for a buddie's 300roy and use 7828. It is sub moa in a very difficult to load for accumark...

If you can't do the basics, you shouldn't be handloading.
Use the appropriate speeds of propellant, start low and work up to velocity.
Along the way, you'll find nodes.
Yes, sometimes, there are "pet" loads... but each rifle is of it's own law... and loadbooks/data are safety guidelines to follow.

jokostel, pull your undies out of your posterior....

You are right though that a bit of load work up is in order, especially with a weatherby and a new bullet.
I cringe that my buddy will want me to try one of the hornady tipped pills in his 300roy. He wants to turn it into a 1,000 rifle; I'm having a hard time bursting his bubble and telling him the rifle is really only good to 500 yards or so as it can not be counted on enough accuracy wise.

I've been reloading on and off for 40 years but thanks for the reloading 101.
Again to anyone that is actually helpful, Just looking for information on this caliber with 220 ELD-X. I've spent most of my Rifle loading with 308 and 223 and this load is for a retired Marine scout sniper friend.

we aren't even at reloading 101 yet....

I'd go to 77 grains or so 7828 or a similar charge of rl22, assuming it isn't too much for your friend's rifle; work up of course. 77 grains 7828 seemed to do the best with the 225 hornady in my buddie's accumark. The 220 eld-x should behave very similarly, but may break 2700 fps a grain or so off from that.

The 30's I've shot with 220-225 grain slugs seem to want to be at the 2700-2750fps mark or right at 3000 fps for respectable accuracy. you'll eat the bolt on the little 300 roy though trying for 3,000 fps. My 300 rum's eat a half hat full of rl33 and break 3,000 fps easily with any of the decent 220 grain or heavier pills out there with .5 to .6 moa from a sporter( no brake and 9# ready to play) being the norm.

I'm currently working with the 200 eld-x in my new 300rum as I'm tiring of only getting 3,000 fps from a usably heavy pill in my 300 rums. My old 300rum is shot out and fouling badly (oddly she still shoots good groups), so she's going under the knife and getting a new barrel this summer.... cartridge/ caliber to be determined.
It's a ****er too, as I have 600 220-225 grain 30 cal's left to be shot up, and the 200 grain eld-x are showing 1/2 moa accuracy so far with little load development. I'm running another box of the 200's through the rifle before I settle on the load but so far so good.

To say the 300 weatherby is only good to 500 yards is pretty laughable. With the Berger 215 with 81gr of h1000 with a 26" barrel I was running at 2900fps seated at mag length. I think you should be able to reach the same speeds with the 220 ELD-X. His is a thread of my elk I took down with my 300 weatherby at 1200 yards.

Also here is my kid hitting steel at 700.

Tony, I was speaking about a specific rifle, not the caliber. If you'd actually read my comment and not cherry picked that as a remark about the caliber, you might have figured that out.

I am not a fan of the roy, but it does put out about the same power as my 300win... I've killed more stuff with that rifle than most of my other current rifles combined. I was rather peeved with the bore on her got tired enough she wouldn't shoot 200-220 grain pills any longer. It still behaves very well though with 165 grain hornady pills, so the rifle isn't going under the knife any time soon.

also, the 215 berger has a rather short bearing surface and usually nets around 100 fps more than other bullets of similar weight. Trying for the same speed out of a 220 as the 215 berger would be a bit foolish.

I loaded a ladder test for a 300 WBY and the 200 ELD-X with Retumbo. I stopped at 85.5 (which was a way compressed load) but was likely at the max or slightly above and was 3050 fps. The best results were at 84-84.5, I think this will be a node when we get the gun a new stock and shoot for accuracy, velocity here was 2950.

I personally feel the 220 is too much for this caliber (and Retumbo) unless you mag box is close to 4", even 84.5 was slightly compressed for a 3.6" max box.

Odd that you should say that.....
I just picked up a 700 Long Range in 300 Win, on a whim...
tested ONLY the 200 ELD-X..... and I went back, to yet again.... a pet charge weight.
a WLRM, 3.4.80 (.020 off engagement) 84 grains of Retumbo.... ragged hole at a 100m... 4831SC didn't have a very clean report or recoil, and H1000 opened up dramatically the minute I got towards the wall. At 75.2 grains it was 3/4 in, and by 76.5 she was at 2 inches.... no thanks.
I'll stick with Retumbo.... That will give an honest 3050-3100 fps in a 26 in barrel with a 200 Grainer..... you're not going to get much better with a Win or a Roy.

You may have a hotter lot of Retumbo that I did, the WBY I tested had a 26" barrel as well and both 84.0 & 84.5 were right at 2950 fps.
