Hello everyone,
Im sure this has been talked about a lot but the search function doesn't work for me. I just bought some Berger 190 VLD for my 300 win mag and bought Retumbo powder thinking it will be a good powder to use. I started doing research and was finding that most say Retumbo is a little too slow of a burn rate for the 300 wm with 190 gr bullets. So just curious if anyone uses the 190 gr VLD with Retumbo in a 300 win mag? Thanks for any and all help.

Never tried that combo so I can't help. But if the search button had worked for you; H1000 and 215 Bergers would of come up. Its a perfect match and you really should try it.

Didn't have the velocity I was hoping for with Retumbo. My best load for 190 Berger VLD is 71.5g of H4831SC at 3043 FPS out of my SAKO M995 with 24" 1:11"; harvested a MT bull elk at 931 yards in 2013 with it.

Intended use is for hunting with some long range targets. Mostly hunting though. Range can be anywhere from 50 yards to about 500 to 600 yards with 600 being very rare. Rifle used is a remington 700 XCR II with 24 inch barrel.

For hunting inside of 600yrds, you can't go past RE25 with any bullet 180gr or heavier. H1000 is only slightly better in accuracy and smaller ES/SD, but it is minimal. My rifle really likes RE25, it's not my LR rig, it's a Kimber 8400 26" barreled 300WM.

Cheers.

With your intended use being 600 and closer, velocity will trump the high BC bullets like the 215grainers. So, consider the Berger 168grain hybrid and send them fast.

Retumbo is not far from H1000 (1 or 2 notches) on most burn rate charts so there isn't much difference IMO. You can still try it, your rifle may or may not like it. Hodgdon list the 200gn AB with Retumbo (73.0@2703fps - 78.0C@2872) but nothing lighter and they're using a 24" barrel also.

I'm using RL26 right now w/208gn ELM-M's, but I was using Retumbo w/208gn A-Max's. You could try the 190's but you would have to work up in to them. Someone on here may be using the combo you're seeking. Either way, it would be uncharted territory for you and your rifle. Be careful and good luck. JohnnyK.

Thanks for all the help and all the suggestions I already have the 190 Bergers so I will possibly work with what Hodgdon website suggests and see how it works. If not I may try the H4831sc with them.

Not wanting to start another thread so thought id ask on here. What is more important to you for long range or is it a combination for both between ES & SD when looking at velocity strings. What is the best number for both. I went out shot my 7mm RM with 168 Berger. High was 2944. Low was 2916. Avg was 2935. ES is 28. SD is 13. Will be testing my 300 now that I found a load with the 190 Bergers with 72.5 gr of H4831sc. Thanks for any help.

Consistency, consistency, consistency. Yours was similar to mine and I think you're getting closer. My groups opened up at 72.5gr, backed it down to 71.5gr and played with my seating depth to reduce my SD to a single digit.

Good luck!
