I've shot a lot of pigs with 155 Amax out of a 22" M1A running 2790fps. DRT hits was common. I sold that gun since and hit a nice boar 🐗 at 80yds with 155gr Amax out of an AR-10 18" barrel. Speed At 2615fps. Bullet went through the front shoulder, both lungs, and recovered in the hide. I'd guess it was 300lb boar.

I have 2 18" semi auto guns now, and with the slower velocities and the desire for pass through shots I'm gonna give the 168s a try for added punch.

So, I said all that to post my current load development with the AR 308. The gas gun with adjustable gas block seems to like the Hornady "service rifle" max charge of 42gr of H4895.

Bullet: 168 Amax
Powder: H4895 42gr
Case: Privi Partisan (56gr H2O capacity)
Primer: CCI 34 (Military primer hardness)
COAL: 2.805
Temp: 70
Elev: 750ft
Ave MV: 2565fps
Group: 10 shot MOA

Varget, AA2520, IMR 4064 ranging in the 41.5-43.5 range with .3gr increments shot sub 2500fps and grouped horribly. They also didn't run the gas system 100% like H4895 did. (Neither the M1A)

I'm thinking these gassers like the powder burn rates of H4895 and slightly faster burning powders. IMR 8208 XBR comes to mind as a possible candidate.

What are your experiences with gas guns?
