7mm RUM

Have any of you done much loading for this caliber? I just got mine, actually haven't even fired it yet. I'm planning on loading a Barnes Triple Shock first.

I would like to here anyones experience with this round. I plan to use it for long range hunting of Whitetail. A lot of my places present long shots around large wheat and oat fields.

I shoot a .300 RUM, been using the 200gr Accubond & 220gr MK with great luck, 1/2in groups with a factory Sendero other than the trigger. As for 7mm 140gr or 160gr Accubond & 168gr or 175 MK in front of a healthy dose of either R22,R25,7828 or Retumbo anything slow burning should produce. I Favor all the heavier bullets with the Ultra Mag's. The triple shock performed ok in my 300 (1.0in). Kinda pricy for my likings but tough as hell 98% to 100% weight retenion in wet phone books. The Winchester Fail Safes can penetrate lots of phone books also with 100%retenion. I have shot 2 doe with both rounds one at 236 yards w/the Accubond and on at 60yd w/ the MK. The 220gr Match King at 3083fps does some bookoo damage man... the inside looked like jello massive wound channel. A bit to fast for 60 yards go with the 160 Accubond and dont look back!! good luck

I shoot the 140 accubonds out of my 7mm with 88 grains of H4831. I get .5 inch groups with my Savage.

Shooting a round with the capacity of the 7mm RUM, you should stick to the 160 plus bullets. You have plenty of velocity, and the 160 bullets will outperform the 140s at longer ranges. Also, pushing the 140s at the higher velocities, could cause bullet failures at closer ranges due to being past the velocities the 140s were designed for. Check out trajectories and energies for 160s. 140s & 160s are close out to 350-400 yds. At 500+ yards, the superior BC & SD of the heavier bullets really show up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Good point. I do have some 160 accubonds but I haven't had a chance to work up a load yet.

FWIW - I used 139gr Hornady Interbonds this year in my 7mm RUM. The load was 92gr of IMR7828, never chrono'd it but I think its going about 3600. Shot very well, I really put this bonded bullet to the test. I took a whitetail buck at 60 yards, bullet clipped the edge of one shoulderblade, took several ribs, and broke the far shoulder. The buck didn't take a step after the shot. I recovered the bullet just under the skin on far side. Looked just like the ads show it. Retained 68% of its original weight. Not bad for that speed at that range. I am very impressed with the Hornady Interbond, I may see how the 154gr shoots also, it may be just the ticket for critters bigger than a whitetail.

I have yet to try the triple shocks yet but I have loaded the regular 140 grain XBT bullets with 87 grains IMR 7828 a CCI BR2 primer and had good results ( just under half inch groups ) and also same powder charge with a federal 215 primer and the groups opened up to 3/4 inch. They perform great on game with great one shot quick kills. I hear the triple shocks shoot tighter than the XBT also. I have used the 140 accubond and got decent accuracy with 90.5 grains H1000 and CCI 250 primers. didn't get a chance to try them an whitetail though.

When I first got my 7mm ultra I tried a few of the factory loads and got very poor results. I went ahead and started the load research and came up with a load that produces 1/2 inch groups.
150 grn Swift Scirocco with 80 grns of IMR 4831 @ 3125fps

Great whitetail load, I hunt with several rifles but with my 7mm ultra one example I can give is a whitetail at 326yds shot placed just behind the right shoulder took out the heart and dropped him in his tracks. Not a long shot by any means but very affective load.
