Removed the action only to find the material for the rear most guard screw was 90% missing. CNC doesn't guarantee the fixturing is properly aligned or the program is good. Returned the gun to Savage and they returned it with the same problem. The channels were not centered on either the first or second rifle. The third wouldn't shoot better than an inch. Returned it and received a gun that would shoot an easy .5. Like I said thy're crap shooters.

Never had the slightest issue with any Ruger, long gun or hand gun.

Was that in the synthetic stock rifles, or laminate wood? I never had a problem, but my one Savage has a HS stock, another has the AccuStock, and my .17 HMR is laminate wood.

Sometimes these posts are sort of like watching a tennis match. It's just back and forthe until someone gives up. I'm sure you guys both have some real world experience and valid points but maybe you should just share what the OP asked for. Which was, what is the most accurate out of the box factory rifle? Not, what gun is the biggest piece of crap?

I learn a lot from all of you guys but the egos drive me crazy sometimes.

Has anyone heard or bothered to ask if the OP ever got around to buying a new gun? This is a fairly old thread, it would be interesting to see if he even bought anything.

And, does it shoot 1/4 MOA out to 3,000 yds like everyone promised.

I have a winchester model 70 coyote in 300wsm and currently know of several loads that shoot half moa or better. I also know of another 300 and a couple 270wsms that all shoot sub half moa. I have also seem rugers, remingtons, and savages shoot well when fed what they like. this is like asking what flavor ice cream you like. and what are you trying to do with this rifle??? what cartridge???

Most accurate out of the box gun is almost too broad to narrow down. Too many qualifiers.

To say a Savage shoots like crap would be a misconception but 1 out of 3 does make them a crap shoot (like rolling dice) and that's the reality of it (just my experience) and Ive seen them shoot pretty darn good. I just got tired of sending it back because of quality escape issues. Doesn't make for good press and sure wouldn't go down as best out of the box in my opinion but I'm biased. For me it has to be Ruger Winchester Remington because they were none problematic and not necessarily in that order.

Maybe whats the best (most accurate) out of the box gun shooting:
factory ammo
100yds
3 shot groups
under $700.00
Sporter barrel
wooden stock
under 24"
<1" group

Most of them, then you have to start narrowing it down.

custom load
< .5"
laminated
30" barrel
fluted heavy
bedded, pillared
under $1000.00
etc etc

It might be easier to decide which gun wont get picked as best out of the box.

WEATHERBY ACCUMARK and Thompson encore.

I have personally had outstanding luck with my Browning X-bolt 300wm, but i have a plain jane Rem 700 30-06 that has consistantly shot less than 1 moa groups

savage i have 4 savages and they all will shoot .5 at 100yds

Best I ever saw, was a 20" AR-15 kit from Black Thorne I assembled for a buddy. 36gr barnes varmit grenades five shot .25in cluster @ 100. Suposedly, could be a marlin barrel.

The wife's 270 Savage does real nice.
