.25 wsm

I have a 25 WSM that I use for hunting White tail, pigs, mule deer and Yotes. It has a Defiance action with a CF Preferred barrel with a 7,5 TW. Trigger is a Trigger Teck red diamond.
I love it and have been using one for years. Pretty easy to load for and cases are easy to form.
I use Peterson 270WSM brass with a two step neck reduction. Necks must be turned after initial sizing and firing and I take the neck wall down to 13K and it does really well after being fired twice. Peterson is a little thicker case so it does not completely form with one firing. Norma is the same but seems a little softer brass then the Peterson. Each case is annealed after every firing.
As a hunting rifle I run a 22" barrel and fire suppressed. Very low recoil.
Using 92g HH over H4831sc with Rem 91/5m primers and V is 3,505 with 6 SD over 10 rounds. Groups are consistent at .3-.4 if I am doing my job. Running 30K jump and 1k NT with a double pull on a lubed mandrel. Cold clean bore shot is 0 .1 " from normal groups.
Had to re-barrel after 1,500 rounds
I tried to build a 6.5 WSM and was not happy with the performance and it was more difficult to find the right load. Never got it under 3/4 " groups and SD's were sad, at best.
Have never had to track an animal more then 20 yards, with this rig and most were DRT. Again, if I am doing my job. Longest kill shot I have with it is 465 yd's. I am sure it will go further but I have a 500 yard redline due to age related eyes.

Great post. I have a couple of questions. Does the get thicker, if so how much? in the neck wall after necking down? Does the brass grow in length after sizing? If you fire form the brass before turning the necks is there any difference in the performance of the turned and unturned? Would you share your reamer specs? Thanks Staz

I've got one I use 300 wsm brass because I have a lot 70gr of retumbo shoots really well I plan on making a 6mm 300 wsm a 6.5 300 wsm and a 338 300 wsm
That should show quickly if going up or down is more advantageous. Both seem to work. I'm shooting straight 300 WSM this year. Are you using Magnum primers with 70 grains of Retumbo? 300 WSM is an odd case, it straddles the infamous 60 grain point.

I've had one since 2012, and a 6.5-300WSM both spun up together.
However, mine are both standard twist, 25 is 10" and 6.5 is 9".
I use 115g Berger in 25 and 142g ABLR in 6.5. Powder I use is Win 780 Supreme. Neither give me exceptional speeds, but, are quite accurate.
Both are 26" barrels.
That's something that got me pondering, the twist rate. I have standard 1:10 on my 300 WSM, and it seems that to really take advantage of the case, one needs to take it down to 1:7.5 or 1:8.

The necks are not identical to each other after sizing down, not by much but still happens. The Peterson necks grow about 1 to 1.5 K which can cause a tight fit in the chamber neck area and poor bullet release. I fire form them before doing any trim work as I have found that trimming first causes additional differences because the brass has not moved enough until it is fired. My the way I never seat a bullet with the shank below or at the shoulder neck junction.
The necks need to turned or there may not be enough tolerance in the chamber and may cause a pressure spike due to a slow bullet release from an overly tight neck That issue alone means they must be turned. In this case they are turned to 14k and the neck donut from resizing is removed.
the first firing gives me barrel break-in, rough scope zero, find max powder charge, rough seating, and NT. None of it is great info but provides a good starting point for a ladder and the next firing.
After the first firing the cases get neck turned and case length trimmed, I generally do not need to turn or trim them for another 8 to 10 firings.
As to the reamer you need to contact preferred Barrels for that info.
Keep in mind I am running a fairly mild load in mine and is about 3g off max charge and there is a lot of V on the table. Higher charge weights are going to change some of the above notes due to the higher pressures. Things like number of firings before trimming, maybe fire forming on the first firing, case life, donut issues etc.

If you mean on the 25 WSM i would say yes but check out the bullet stabilization on Bergers free chart. I tied 85, g Ballistic tips and blew several into grey dust at the 7.5 I am running so be sure to check it on the Berger app on their website. My Hammers like it fast.

They will stay together at 3950 in a 9tw, if that's helpful.

One more thing to be caution with is the seating depth. I you have a short action that has a standard-length mag box you may have to seating according to what can fit into the mag and still feed. Mine is a short action with an extended mag box, by Wyatt outdoors and it gives me 100k more capacitary to load longer rounds.

Thanks for all the great info. I will use a mod 70 extreme weather 6.8 western or a classic 270 WSM. Mag boxes are same as Wyatt's extended. SAC makes 6.8 die and is available with 25 cal option. If I use the 6.8 brass I may neck down to .243 and use sierra 116 tmk or new berger 120.
