.280 AI

I've had good luck with Eldx in many other calibers. Spent more time finding the animal vs looking for it. We run 40-50 hunts a year in Texas and old Mexico, so quick recovery is a blessing.
However I am open to anything and would like good bullet and barrel length options before I start this build. I prefer short as possible…
You can't go wrong with accubond and or ballistic tip. I use the 160 accubond for everything and if you get on the notifications on the Nosler site for blemishes it's a bit cheaper.
For barrel length I prefer 26" but I'd be ok with 24".
Edit: if you are happy and confident with the eldx I would stick with them. Confidence is a wonderful thing!

Elmer Keith called that, "doing your hunting before the shot". Still a good practice.

I currently have a 280AI barrel at Benchmark in the works 24" in a savage axis ll I was planning to use 160 cx or 160 TGK as a LR Elk rifle
160 TMK or 165 TGK?
Different weights for the match and game bullet.
I've read good things about the 160 TMK for hunting .
As for the 165 TGK…I punched thru a high double shoulder whitetail with the 165 TGK in a Win 284 a couple years ago and worked fine.
However, For the velocity of this cartridge, I ended up moving down to the 150 TGK last year and caught one under the skin on a hind flank after traveling through from a front shoulder crease quartering in.
I'll post a picture of it in a minute.
They are a tough bullet in my experience.

These pics are of 150 TGK starting @ 2930 in 284 Win and impact velocity around 2760-2800 @ 120 yards.
So, I feel it's a better fit in this 284 and the 280 AI should get the 165's going about the same velocity for similar terminal performance.

I ordered my barrel in march so im getting pretty ansy about now hope I get the call to pick it up before fall

My 8 twist McGowen barreled 280AI's (2 of them) shoot the 145gr LRX at 3113fps with a very stout load of RL19. The mono's don't run as fast as I'd like in my configurations, they pressure up pretty quick.

They shoot the 160gr Partition and the 162gr ELD-X 3175+fps with Ramshot Grand - those were pressure ladders tho, no load workups yet. I've been tinkering with my 257AI's.

We have a bunch of good threads with info on the 280AI - here's a few I've been lurking in:

Agreed. I know this is a long range site but I prefer to get as close as possible and remove some of the variables.
