Ok, got one that has me scratching my head. Aero factory upper in .308 that the bolt will close rather easily but will not come out of battery without a sharp tap with a plastic mallet or rubber hammer…..on an empty chamber. Not really sure what to think, bc this bolt and bcg work just fine on an 8.6blk upper that I put together.

I contacted Aero Precision, but I am really nervous about sending them my upper when they are currently operating under a receivership. If I send it in, With my luck they officially go out of business and I am screwed out of my upper.

Any input from the brain trust here would be appreciated.

Is the 8.6 upper on the same 308 lower? If so, it's likely to be in the barrel extension if it runs smooth in a different upper. I would pull the barrel and take just the bolt and see how it fits in the barrel extension. Should rotate freely and have at least .010" between the front of the lugs and the breech face on the barrel.

was this after the round was fired or just an empty case for checking function? i'd say check headspace as ar10's aren't a mil-spec firearm. how does it function w/o a case only? i have bought bcg's and just bolts that won't headspace in 1 firearm, but will in another..................same has happened in an ar15 w/5.56 and all are supposed to be a mil-spec set

Sounds like a headspace issue to me. Most likely a tight chamber. Any local smith should be able to check the chamber. Or if you have the head spacing gauges you can check it yourself. Who made the barrel?

Absolutely do NOT sent it to Aero. They're completely out of the gun business and focusing on their Aerospace business... I have Aero products and love them and it's very sad they quit the gun business.

A good AR10 gunsmith can quickly diagnose and fix your problem. It's not a huge deal.

how many rounds on the upper? if new or new ish run it wet. i have a complete aero build and it ran terrible at first. same issues and others. what i found was run her wet for a few mags. and i mean wet. the ar forums guys literally said fill it with oil lol. anyway i hosed her down with gun oil and ran a few mags through it as fast as i could. by the end of the third mag she was running like a sewing machine. super cleaned and light oil there on out.

Same Aero lower

On an empty chamber

Pretty Newish, I have put about 25 rds through it Previous owner ran about 100-150rds through it.

308 or 8.6? 308 run some hot mil spec ammo through it super wet. 2 or 3 mag dumps should do it. not broken in yet imo.

Pretty much certain it's headspace that is the issue, the advice to take the bolt out of the carrier and make sure it clearances when in battery in the barrel extension is spot on. If that is OK clean and degrease everything in the BCG and dykem all of the contact surfaces, something is making hard contact and will show. If you don't have dykem use a blue sharpie marker. Make sure it is completely degreased or you'll get false markings. Blue sharpie works, black doesn't and blue is better than red, don't know why but it is. If it isn't bolt to extension interference it is likely the cam pin to receiver or cam pin to carrier that is not working correctly. If it takes more than pinching the carrier with 2 fingers to open and close the bolt it's not right.

Properly built there is no such thing as a break in period on a semi automatic action, or a bolt action either. If it doesn't run from the first round fired it is improperly built/fitted. Period.
