AR-10?

I'm thinking about getting into the gas gun arena. Thinking either .308, 6.5 creedmoor or 6 creedmoor. Mainly just shooting for fun, may consider shooting a couple comps if I can get comfortable behind the gun. What rifles do you guys recommend? I'm fairly well versed with bolt guns, completely uneducated on gas guns.

Well, I have 3 AR10's in .308. I think you need to decide on what your priorities are as far as weight, distance for shots, kind of critters you will use it on, cost of ammo or reloading. FWIW, I have a Rem. R-25 which I believe was made by DPMS and 2 Ruger SFAR's. All 3 shoot well. The Rem. is heavy and the Rugers are considered lightweight. I'm satisfied with them. Just my .02 and I"m sure others will chime in. Good luck, it's a bit of a 'rabbit hole' once you start in the AR game!! lol.

I have a AR-10 (Armalite) in .308 Win. You have plenty of good choices out there. If you near a gun store, pay them a visit and see their offerings, and see what is best suits your needs.Good luck!

with no standardization of the ar10 platform be aware of parts you buy and compatibility! dpms gen1 will be the easier choice imho. 308win should or could be the better choice as that cartridge has less issues in that platform for the novice. nearly all other cartridges offered chamberings can be a challenge to function reliably! no matter the brand, barrel length and/or profile if the gas port size is to small or to big you'll be wasting money on parts to get it to function properly! to date my most accurate 6.5creed ar barrel is a criterion, but it took work to get it to function properly. for out of the box ready to run with standard weight parts (buffer, recoil spring, bcg) and a non-adjustable gas block is an aero precision barrel! i have 2 of that brand's barrels with 2 different gas system lengths (mid length 18", 22" standard rifle length). no brass issues as there's no rim tearing from extractor or ejector marks using hornady factory 123a-max & sst's. the only 6mil i have is a 243win ar.................don't get me started.............(it does feed and eject fine tho).

Revival of a 2026 thread so not too bad for me.
I have two AR 10s. A 20" DPMS Hunter in 308 that has a few mods. Good, accurate, shooter. .375 inch groups at 100 consistently.
Then, a Ruger SFAR 22" rifle plus 1 6mm Creedmore that doesn't have much SFAR left in it. The latter was not a shining example of Ruger quality. Or maybe it was! Nor was Ruger's service work to get it right. Maybe they started it at 4:30 on Friday afternoon. I don't know. It started life as a 6.5 Creed. The barrel was not throated correctly. If you wanted to eject a round the bullet would jam and separate from the case, dumping powder in the upper and lower. I sent it back with a note and a long talk on the phone as this was not the only issue. The gas block was crooked and the adjustment stuck. And the charging handle would come back and hit you in the lip on the last shot. They sent it back with a 5 shot group. I'm thinking maybe they fixed it. Nope. Evidently they didn't read the entire note or try ejecting a loaded cartridge. Still land marks on the bullet all the way to the brass on loads way below saami OAL with several bullet brands and factory loads. They did straighten the gas block and put a new charging handle on it. I promply removed the gas block when I got it back as the rifle was still not fit for hunting with the throat issue and manual ejection powder dumps plus having to take a dowel and get the stuck bullet out. I said the heck with Ruger. I build AR15s regularly. I'll do it myself. I've never really been wowed by the 6.5 Creed, so I ordered a custom 22" 6mm Creed and new barrel extension. That plus a new adjustable gas block, heavier buffer, rifle plus 1 gas system, Geissele National Match 2 stage trigger (always), and things are running the way they should be, its accurate, and it doesn't tear brass up.. I may try a rifle length buffer tube, buffer and spring to smooth the recoil pulse a little. Next time instead of the small frame version I'll just build my own standard sized 10 from scratch.

Here is my opinion. I have two, LR308 rifles in 308 Winchester (24" and 20" barrels). The 24" rifle is a true 1200 yard rifle... on steel. The 20" rifle can be configured for long-range shooting (MAGPUL GEN III STOCK) or carbine.l
I have a 243 Winchester with a 24" barrel. It's a tack driver out to 800 yds. I can hit steel at 1000 yards but termi al energy is the issue. I have a 6.5 CM that will reach out to 1300-1400 yds... on steel. It's pleasant to shoot and easy to reload. I also have a 22-250 on the LR308 platform and is a great rifle. It's a great coyote rifle out to 600 yards (1:14).
Sooo... in my opinion, gas guns work well. The LR308 DPMS (or the AR-10) performs well with some modifications... trigger, buffer tubes, buffer weights, stock, loads, optics, etc.
To be complete, the LR308 rigged for long-range shooting is heavy. Carbine variants are lighter but still a bit heavy. I carried an M60 in Vietnam so all of this is experience related. I'm 6'2", 220 lbs so I don't think that 12 lbs is really heavy and I'm not going to whine about it anyway.

That problem seems to be the norm with sfar's from many forums I've read. With sfar barrel extensions only available thru 1 maker from what people have told me leaves you to 1 place for barrels or sending in the upper and to reuse the extension fir a cartridge of your choice to be installed and headspaced. Sticking with dpms ir even arnalite is the better choice. I've had AR's that were short throated and factry ammo would stick in the chamber/lands. Best of luck to you

Thanks. That is exactly what I have seen. I really wish I had built from scratch. This will sound crazy but I would have preferred a little heavier rifle. I have 2 barrels and 2 extensions now. And hope I can find a good barrel maker that can spin up a premium barrel when this 6mm creed barrel is shot out.
