College Football

The end of the season is nearing. I will spend more time on the sofa than any other time of year. The elite teams are starting to show their true worth. My team (TN Vols) is not in the elite category yet. This was clearly proven on the field with losses to Alabama, Georgia, and Missouri this year.
I felt bad for FSU when they lost their QB, but if anyone was belly aching that they deserved to be in playoffs, it is obvious they currently have no business being labeled elite. It pains me to even think about rooting for Bama, but I generally pull for SEC teams.

I thought I would stir the pot a bit.

Not a FSU fan - I went to GT; but, FSU today is not the FSU of a few weeks ago. After getting poked in the eye by the "committee", many of the best FSU players announced for the pros and sat out tonight. The FSU on the field today is not representative of the FSU of the regular season. That is true at many bowl games as the players are incentivized to use the portal to transfer or opt out for pros.

Meanwhile, UGA has a number of returning players who are staying at UGA (versus going pro) as they cannot afford the pay cut from NIL to go pro,

To the above, agree….but in my mind that shows no heart, likely for the best for all.

Football???? Is that the one where they kick the round ball into the huge nets and flop around like drama queens?

Yeah, that was a ugly beat down for FSU. Even though Kirby tried to play every body with pads on.

If you actually think they didn't deserve to be in the play off you're kidding yourself to think that, being the team they fielded last night vs the actual team they fielded all season prior to the opt outs. Cudos to Georgia for not opting out…great culture going there. But let's not act like FSU team they played with last night was what they fielded 3 weeks ago. Apart from the playoff games, non of the bowls matter. Case in point and we'll use FSU… beat an Oklahoma team last year in the bowl as well as LSU in the opener…come the new season…still ranked lower than LSU in new polls coming into season but somehow managed to blow them out.
I can also see NIL changing as well with agreements being made to play x number of years and not to opt out, schools are going to start protecting themselves as well.

I think within the next 10 years you're going to see college football go to a top 50-60 programs in two major conferences and have an nfl type structure. Tv deals are already trying to get ahold of it. Basically you have ESPN with the SEC/ACC and Fox with the BIG…. Just a matter of time until there's a brokered share for the playoffs. ESPN holds the cards for now but that's probably going to change.

The NIL situation has definitely changed college football. I agree FSU performance yesterday is not reflective of where the team was many weeks ago. However, the committee was charged with picking the 6 best teams at the end of the regular season. IMO FSU was clearly not one of those 6.

The team they fielded no. If players didn't opt out it's a lot more competitive game. But most bowls with teams on the fringe of being in or out will have similar issues fielding a team similar to what represented them all season. Ohio state is another example of what opting out will do. Not that Missouri is bad but realistically that's the biggest bowl Missouri will ever get into. But its gobs have to change at some point.

The FBS is straight BS, money has ruined it as only money can do. Several schools will get the top prospects and play for a title and the others will play freshman against freshman in the Depends Under Garments Nowhere Bowl. Any player or coach that quits on their school/teammates or transfers before seasons end should be required to pay back their scholarship/contract in full. The student half of student/athlete has been deleted in most of the big time programs. NIL is a joke to anyone who isn't a female gymnast and the transfer portal should be axed asap. Hopefully the FCS isn't next, sure is refreshing to watch those kids play for the love of competition, their schools, and their team.

I agree!

Unfortunately, it's all about the money now. College football has always been my favorite. I used to enjoy watching games all day on Saturday. why? Because every game mattered, and the kids played that way. Now it's different and it's about what teams and games will make the most money in the playoffs. And for the kids it's about how to protect their marketability and go as high as they can in the draft.

all that said…. Go Texas. Normally, I'd be all Big Ten, but I can't root for the team up north.

I agree, looks like since NIL is going to remain the ncaa should cap schools total and players should have to sign a binding agreement with the school. I know most NIL comes from 3rd parties so that's what is killing it mostly. Because they don't have a connection directly to the schools.

College Football is now Pro Football. Time to treat College Football as a professional sport with all the tax implications - strip away the education trappings and tax breaks.

Sadly, it has always been about the $$$$. NIL has just added another level of complexity. The transfer portal is conceptually a good thing, but has completely erased the commitment component to the team a player signed with. The top schools with the best coaches and deep pocketed supporters will continue to dominate.
