Do all rifle???

I'm torn between 4 different calibers. My go to hunting rifle is a 6.5x284 but I was raised on the 308 or 7.62x51. My two other calibers are the 260 Remington and 6MM Norma Dasher. For a SHTF gun. It would be the 308.

Can buy ammo at gas stations! It will kill everything from prairie digs to moose with right bullet. Nothing flashy just a blue collar caliber that gets it done under any condition. Very under appreciated with 22" barrel but really starts to shine with 24" or longer.
That would be my close #2 behind 300WM.
.308 for ease of load development and long barrel life

Grew up using 30 ought 6 for everything. But then I graduated to other cartridges. This season I went back to 30 ought 6 and recovered the joy of a cartridge that really does quite well at everything. I only killed a doe with it but me it reminded me of all the great things you can do with a 30 ought 6. Now you can do great things with all these other cartridges that have been recommended also. But the most important thing is whatever cartridge you choose you have good accuracy and a rifle you're comfortable with.

6.5 Grendel has been my all around go to for awhile now..... Haven't found any reason to look elsewhere, does a little of everything

The doe antelope, mule deer buck and raghorn elk kilt with it last fall cant be wrong! If it wernt for the Wyoming winds I'd give the Grendel the nod.

J. Y. Jones wrote a book about shooting every big game species in North America with the same gun. A 30-06, kind of makes me want one, but I'm about stuck on a 280AI.

I think it's an unfair question though, although I love basically every cartridge listed here. I think to be fair to yourself, you should have 2 at a minimum. A good 6.5 cartridge, prc or so, but the creedmoor isn't a bad option for critters under 250lbs, and then a big dog for handling the elk. If a man had a 6.5prc let's say, and a fast .30 or a fast .338, you could always feel good with a tag in your pocket.
