One “Do it All Cartridge” - All of NA

Bullet may be required to "multi-task"! memtb

#6 - cartridge....bullet weight, bullet (cup-core, partition, mono) design (based upon a potential mixed bag hunt in "big" bear country - no back-up) and brief explanation for your choice
I would probably do a copper if I wanted the most multi-animal bullet but I think a partition would work as well.

Well what I have that would qualify would be my r700 trued action, m16 extractor installed in bolt. 26" bartlein 9 twist 3b contour barrel. Leopold vx3i 4.5-14 30mm tube with side focus and cds turret. Sits in a hs precision stock. It's in 300 win mag. Can load 215 Berger's for long range or load a mono for dangerous game.

On that Caribou hunt, or stalking that Dall....how fast can you switch from Berger's to the mono's? ;) I intentionally made this a situation where some compromises must be made! Didn't want it to be too easy! Nothing would be perfect, for all situations! :) memtb

A subject that has been "beaten to death..... with many side-stepping the thread intent. Some choosing custom or full "wildcat" chamberings, some picking rifle/cartridge combo's with impractical weight for everyday, various terrain use by "normal" humans, factory ammunition must be available, potentially needed as a stopping cartridge. So, here's the criteria for the challenge.

Rifle/Cartridge must meet this criteria: only one rifle allowed
#1 - used for all North American Big Game (including dangerous game - assuming no back-up)
#2 - rifle weight - under 11.0 pounds (scoped, fully loaded, slung)
#3 - If a bipod is used - total rifle weight cannot exceed 11.0 pounds (scoped, fully loaded, slung, and bipod)
🌟 additional 👍 points for combo's coming in at less than 9.0 pounds
#4 - factory cartridge - (improved chambering allowed) must be able to fire a factory cartridge
#5 - various terrain - thick timber/brush to hunting elk, sheep or goats in the mountains, to wide open western plains
#6 - cartridge....bullet weight, bullet (cup-core, partition, mono) design (based upon a potential mixed bag hunt in "big" bear country - no back-up) and brief explanation for your choice

I hope I haven't missed anything!
This should give you something to think about while sequestered at home! So.....what's your "poison"? memtb
I went through this exercise last year. I bought a Christensen Arms BA Tactical in 6.5 PRC. Mounted a Leupold VX6HD 4-24x52 in nightforce UL rings and a tall Atlas CAL bipod. All in I am at 10.2lbs. I have plans to shoot the 156 berger for everything. I regularly hunt in grizzly country in Idaho and am planning on an Alaskan moose hunt in 2021 with this set up. Would I hunt a grizzly with it - you bet. Would it stop a charging grizzly? Maybe maybe not, but I came to the conclusion that nothing but a shot to the face is going to stop one with anything less than a .400 + caliber, so I am betting my life on a 156gr berger and am at peace with it :). Realistically I'll have a sidearm when I am in that country, but I know that wasn't part of the game:)

300 win mag. Trued rem. action. 24 inch sendero lite carbon barrel. In a Oregon gun smithing stock. Good trigger (your choice). Good muzzle brake (your choice). Javelin bipod. Nightforce 2.5-10x42. Talley lite rings. I think this will come in close to or under 9 lbs. Reason for the 300 win mag is the wide variety of bullets available plus should stand a pretty good chance of purchasing factory ammo if the need arises. Now the bullet choice? I'm a little unclear if I can only pick one bullet, but again one reason I picked the 30 caliber rifle is the wide range of bullets that could be used from varmint to moose or the big bears if that's what you need. My 2 cents worth which on a good day is usually only worth about 1/2 cent 😁.

300 win mag
NF atacr 4-16x42
Proof carbon fiber sendero contour
Mcmillan game warden edge fill
200 gr. Eldx for long shots
180 partitions/190 LRX for anything 500 yards & under
Atlas bipod, 4 rounds, slung - 10 lbs 9 ounces ready to hunt!

Built this very rifle last year - hope to add its twin before fall.

After 15+ years of going round and round building countless customs I have gone full circle back to the 300 win mag. It just plain works!

That's a good point. If I'm hunting in an area that has grizz then id run monos in the mag. Hopefully the poi would be close enough between the two for a couple hundred yard shot. If I see anything further out then load in a Berger's. If just black bear the Berger's will be more than enough.

I'm sure I could come up with something else if I put my mind to it, but I'd be plenty comfortable with my 300 Wby as an All Around Rifle shooting 181 grain Hammer Hunters. I had it built for a guide rifle when I was hunting in Mexico in the early 90s by Mr Kleinguenther on a Sako action......it shoots several factory loads very well.... .5 MOA+/-......I wouldn't hesitate to use it for anything on this continent with the Hammers or Nosler Partitions!

This all should put me in the parameters set and give me my magic 3000 FPS and 4000 lbs of energy. Thanks to member Josh I'm going to work this rifle up to see if it performs to plan. It's waiting to be picked up at the gun shop, a victim of Covid-19.
