I’m gonna try to hunt Racoons!

A 22lr is more than enough to kill a coon. They are a game animal and subject to specific hunting seasons and regulations in Indiana unless you shoot them on owned land and they are doing damage to property. They like dog food, corn, chickens, garbage. etc. They come out just after dark in the winter but can be seen during the day, especially if they are hungry. Spring, summer, and fall they are active just before dark. Good Luck.

Most coons seen during the day are not rabid. Especially when trying to call them . Cold weather kills the rabies . According to a book I read wrote by a wildlife biologist. Skunks on the other hand can and will carry rabies and never show any signs of it . Also according to the same biologists.

Time for some maintenance.

If it's legal this time of the year to trap them, just set out some Duke dog-proof traps near the corn. I load mine with peanut butter covered marshmallows. No waiting around trying to hunt them. They will be caught and waiting for you in the morning. Dispatch the coon, reload the trap and there will be another one in the trap the next morning.

Night time is the right time to hunt raccoons (if its legal in your state) Here's my night-time critter gitter:

That's a Marlin 7000 heavy barrel (not made anymore) with Sub-zero green light. I like to use Fiocchi Subsonic Hollow Points--quiet but very deadly expansion on critters.

We've got a big fat one active during the day especially in the afternoons near a tree stand I hunt.

Year before last I watched him beat the brakes off a young coon, chased him up a dead cedar, threw his little butt out of the the tree 20 feet then went back down after him and gave it to him one more time. Some of the most fun I've ever had.

plenty eat them but I don't care for it too much.
