Looking at there two calibers for my for my next Savage build. Leaning toward the 6.5 because I have the big stuff covered. Whichever way I go my only question is what(SAVAGE) action will work best for each. For the 300 does savage make a long action with a mag. that will fit the 3.7 coal of the 300prc (without going to there 338lm action). Or does someone make aftermarket bottom metal & magazine for savage that will work with 3.7 coal. If I go with the 6.5prc my concern is do I go long or short action. It will be shooting 143 eld or 140 vld out of a 22 or 24 proof pre-fit. The short action savage mags. I measured were right at 3in. With the saami 2.955 coal max might be a little tight if I need to stretch them out. Let me know the good, bad & ugly for these two. Just because I like to show it off here is my last project. savage 112 magnum target action 24in proof barrel 338 LM, McMillan game hunter stock, break & chambered by LRI 12.5 lbs with scope & bipod

I'm not up on Savages but if you dont have a 3.7 mag box factory 300 PRC ammo wont fit

I have a 6.5prc in a short action. The magazine is pretty tight with factory loaded 143 eldx bullets. I am not concerned about being able to jam into the barrel. I wanted as compact as a rifle as I could get because I only hunt to 400 yards and I do not need ultra accuracy with specific bullets. Anything sub 1 MOA is fine. If I was doing a true long range build id be getting a medium to long action.

As for caliber. I personally think the 6.5prc will be more popular than the 300prc which means factory support will be better and selling the rifle down the road will be easier if I wanted to sell it. As for game, the 6.5prc will take down anything in North America BUT I personally would go larger if larger game was my main target. If you hunt whitetails an smaller with the occasional Elk...then 6.5prc is great. If you will be hunting Elk regularly with a possible moose or brown bear in the works, id be going 300prc.
