Hello group,
I'm looking for help on a rifle build, I'm wanting to have a 6.5-284 custom rifle built.
My goal is to start purchasing the parts needed over time and then have a gunsmith build my rifle. I figure it will be financially easier for me to buy pieces one at a time over the next year.
I'm by no means a gunsmith so I want to be sure I buy the correct action etc so I do not waste my money, so with that said what do I need?
I'm thinking long action but not sure if I need a magnum diameter or not?
Then depending on action I buy do I need to match barrel thread to action or does gunsmith do this? I'm looking at a proof research carbon wrapped barrel.
Any experienced help or recommendations of parts would be greatly appreciated.
Mike

.308 boltface & long action. I have 1 on a rem 700 LA, 2 on Stiller tac 300. All are very accurate. Two Bartlein 26" 5R 1:8 twist and a 26" Kreiger 4 groove in 1:8 twist.

So standard long action, got it. Now I noticed you built all of yours on 26" barrels, I was looking at a 24". Any recommendations on barrel length?

I've found a bit more velocity and better accuracy. If I was younger, I'd have 28" tubes. I don't think a 24 would be your best option for 6.5-284. I forgot to mention the Bart's are fluted 3B contour and the Kreiger is 4 contour.

Are you planning on buying a custom action or use a rem or Savage. What you will need is a barrel I would do a 26 inch for a 6.5-284 gunsmith will thread it for what ever action you decide and for muzzle brake if you want one so may need a muzzle brake will need recoil lug unless the action you choose has one built on action already will need a trigger many good ones out there will need a stock stockys stocks have quite a few to choose from also have carbon barrels probably need some kind of bottom metal hinged floor plate or dbm also if you buy a custom action many have the scope base built on them so if your shooting long range will need to know how much angle on it you need probably a 20 moa hope this helps good luck

I initially bought a factory rifle w/ a fluted, varmint profile 26". Replaced it with unfluted, varmint 28". No particular reason other than that's what I wanted. Happy with results. johnnyk.

first off what are you going to do with this rifle? how much do you want to stay with? after some more info we can tell you a lot. also what price range are you looking to stay in

I this put together a few years ago using an old (1970's)Remington 700 Action(trued). Sendaro/Varmint contour, 26", 1;8 twist.

Check out my New Alamo post. I picked out everything! They put it all together.
I think it's going to rock! Don't cut corners..Do your research it might take a little longer but you will be glad in the end! And remember it's only money
I went with a Lone Peak Fuzion action ..
