7 mm rem mag 140 gr Barnes TTSX load needed for DRT Deer and Hogs

My Buddy and I bought two Tikka 7mm rifles and he has killed two bucks with his... a 218 lb and a 224 lb. The bigger one ran 40 yards, and the other one ran 15 yds... both shot within 75 yds. Both were shot broadside behind the shoulder...WITHOUT any exit hole or blood... which is bad when hunting in thick brush and not sure if the deer is hit or not... just have to walk in the direction it ran in order to find the body. He is disappointed because his 300 win mag shooting factory Hornady American 150 gr interlocks knocks every deer in the dirt no matter where the shot placement. He says he never tracked a deer when shooting it.

The 7 mm is shooting reloads 139 gr hornady sp bullets... about 3100 fps.

SO........... I have to reload him some loads that will make his 7mm act like a 300 win mag with DRT kills.

SO.... we are going to try the Barnes triple shocks bullets... but not sure if there is a super load that will be SUPER effective... other than just following regular book loads. We have NOT tried Barnes bullets before, so we are not sure if these loads need to be hot and forceful.... or do these bullets need a slower speed to work properly.

Thanks Guys for your Help.

Barnes are different than regular cup and core bullets, they're super tough and tend to have complete pass throughs. They don't tend to drop animals as quickly as softer bullets but on the other hand they rarely fail, I've never lost an animal shot with a TTSX.

The conventional wisdom, which I agree with, is that barnes needs to be driven fast and to drop down in bullet weight. I would recommend going to a 120TTSX and driving it fast, my own deer load for the 7mm rem mag is that bullet at 3350 fps. I also recommend shooting for bone, I shoot for the mid-high shoulder. Don't shoot them behind the shoulder or they'll likely run a ways.

If you are shooting distances that don't need high BC bullets, a Nosler Partition will kill Deer and Hogs Deader Right There better than anything. Get some 150 gr Partitions and some H-1000 powder.

I use 150 grn ETIPS in my 7rm. IMR7828 (64 to 67 grns), I use CCI250 primers, 67grns IMR7828 AND I stress that I have worked up to that in my rife. Nosler recommends a 50 thou" jump and so do I.
This is a deadly load for any animal includeing moose

I guess it must also be ignorant to say that the only way to guarantee a DRT shot is to destroy the brain or spinal cord. You can load whatever bullet suits you, however none of them will guarantee DRT results when placed in the normal vital zone.

Daniel I only load and shoot Barnes. I moved up to the 145 LRX for my 7 MM. I followed the data from on line. The gun shoots well and the bullets work well. As Garycrow said, and something I have learned in about 16 years of hunting with these bullets, is that they are high powered broad heads but they don't leave big holes. Shoot for bone and don't worry about meat loss because you won't have much. These are great hunting bullets.

Personalities aside this is 100% correct.

As for the OP, no need to make it complicated, If you can find Hornady Interbonds, buy them and load them, if you can't buy accubonds.

I've had to track a lot of animals shot well with a TTSX for clients and neighbors, many of them never bled much and several finally just quit and walked off onto other neighboring places never to be seen again.

H1000 or Reloder23, or 26 are all great with 140-160gr bullets.

I have some 150gr Peregrine VLR Samples which have become my "go to bullets. In my STW the 160's being pushed with 75.6gr of RL23 printed a half inch 3 shot group for me today at 200 yds 3 separate times.

Since I went to the VRG4 and VLR I've put more than forty large hogs and deer down all with one shot kills and have yet to recover a single bullet even shooting the shoulders exceeding 400yds from my .260 and .300wm.

If you wanted to try them I'd send you some.

The blood trailing comment was made as a simple reference to the fact that not all animals will be dropped in place, no offense intended.

morning, I have used barnes bullets since produced. the TSX was
a bit hard. shot for bone. the new TTSX and LRX bullets r very good
meat getters. barnes bullets have to b pushed hard!! these bullets
r very accurate meat getters. I highly favor barnes bullets for
hunting bullets. 223,22-250,243,6mm,257wbee,7mmwbee 300WM,
340wbee, all for hunting. I use Lapua bullets in my 6mm.

thank you Guys for your helpful comments. My buddy and I are very good at tracking blood trails.... BUT.... if the bullet does not exit, then there is no blood to track.

My buddies 300 win mag puts every deer in the dirt.. all the time... and it blows blood out the exit side.... if tracking was needed.... so.... I'm trying to find out what bullet powder combo would make our 7 rem mags act like his 300. I was leaning towards the 120 or 140 ttsx..... but now am also thinking about the hornady 160 sst... or sierra 160 sbt... just looking for maximum DRT shocking... and possibly a blood trail on the exit side if needed.... the same thing as the 300 win mag.

thanks again Guys.
