I had my Machinist friend in California look at your pictures, and here is what he wrote me lat night:
holy crap!! thats awesome that guy is a hobbyist....
he's kinda on the expert level of hobbyist though IMO.
i didnt post in the blog but he could probably cavity the heck outta the forestock area on top and bottom. just by looking, i am guessing he could get 30% of the material off just by cutting cavities and not compromise the structural ridgidity that hes concerned with?
It would be similar to an aircraft wingspar where they start with a large piece and remove 60-80% leaving a floor in the middle with ribs on both sides of the floor (cavities between ribs)
He also sent me a picture of a wingspan on my Facebook page. I am not sure you can click on it to open it, so if it doesn't work, I will find a different link, and post it. My friend Joe is a really good machinist, and builds some awesome stuff from aluminum. If you want, PM me your email address, and I can send you some of his work. Maybe he can give you some help via email and pictures? I think you have a great idea, and it is worth per suing. You may very well end up building some custom stocks to sell to Bench Rest guys?

Sorry for the slow reply I have been away a bit and sick for a while . Thanks for the support . I will PM you my email. I agree that I can hog out a lot more weight and get it down to under F class open weight . However I have been away and not done much of late.
When my workshop warms up a bit more I will start to lighten it some more.
Before I went away I fired the first 5 shot group from the 243 barrel and it went .387 . I was quite excited but then I fired a 10 shot 1.2 . However 5 of the group were in under .4 . So it is looking good so far as I am still learning on how the gun shoots and the day scope I am using is only a 3.5 to 10 and is not the best for the job . I can't afford a Vortex yet.
What I am looking for is a consistant sub MOA performer that never changes zero due to weather or heat etc . I think I am on track but still have some work to do.
Be a whole lot easier if I had a custom action to start with but no such luck.

Hi bullet bumper, nice work mate, i am a machinist yet i dont possess either the motivation or dedication to produce something like that, i really wish i did, give yourself a pat on the back.
I have a mate just like you an exceptional machinist better then most i worked with, he builds his own guns as well but his latest project is an exact copy of a bald eagle front rest complete with rack and pinion primary rise, the rack and pinion gear machined from scratch and the base cast from aluminium to a pattern he made himself. keep up the good work mate.

P.S. a nice royal blue or crimson anodising for target versions of your stock and wrinkle finish balck or olive drab for field versions would set it them nicely.

It is hard to get going on something like this as the money I have spent on machines has put me back in other areas such as I can't afford the day scope I need and a few other things till I pay off my machines. It's the old story two steps forward one step back . I am only an ex war veteran so I don't have lots of money and I was disabled in the Vietnam war so I have never been able to get high paying work . Thanks Ian for the support and well wishes I do genuinely appreciate the sentiment . It has not been easy and even physically painful at times but I will win in the end . You are right a Royal Blue would look fantastic and blue is my favourite color . When I finish the gun I will post some photos on LRH exclusively as this is one of the few forums to show some appreciation for the work of it's members . That is what attracted me to the forum. Nice people.

heres my on going build for allthings varment like

its a stevens 223 with a cheap scope for now,riflebasix trigger,stockys light weight thumb hole stock pillered and bedded, i lapped the locking lugs and bolt rails.

still needs a good barrel but two things, i dont know if i want to leave it a 223 or switch to the AI 223
and second it just shoots too dang good right now to mess with it yet ;-}

.243 I've had for a year with new glass. TRS-1 is a upgrade from the old red field illuminator that I was using. I zeroed it today and tomorrow I hope to stretch it
Out a little. Shooting 87vmax so far Im happy with how I can shoot with it.

not sure what is loudest the report of the rifle or that bright yellow stock ( I like It) It is really nice. Also Bullet Thumper do you have a caliber max size you can have in Australia? Just looking at your design and from what I have seen on other threads You maybe on to something for everyone. especially magnum shooters up thru .50cal could be interesting adventure. Nice work
