Long Range .270 Build

Do they not? Or do you not know?

Marshall, I believe is the name, of Matrix informed me that he didn't think (or knew) that they wouldn't hold up to 3 groove, 8 twist and 3500 fps.

That is what I'm going by and thus haven't tried them

I have something that works instead which will work well. I'll have more precise evidence when I get back home in March.

I'm building a 270 stw at this very moment just for the matrix 165&175 bullets. I'm hoping to push the 165 around 3350 from a 28" bbl.

Interesting!! You should have no issues getting that speed, I've ran them to 3220 fps in my WSM but it's not a good long term deal! I'm still toying with a hot rod and I'm thinking a 5R rifling in 1-10 twist and nitriding but that's a lot of coin to out run the WSM which will run in the mid 3100's if you can have accuracy with it as well.

That doesn't run up to being smart $ wise. It was a lot of years, before the chrono became available (paper screens) I shot lots of muley with a 130 gr Sierra loaded as the book said to 3100. Chrono'd years later @ just under 2900. What a major letdown. Found N-205 and immediately went to 3190.:)

Ya know, it made exactly no difference in harvest success. Go figure.....

If I had a WSM that shot as yours does I wouldn't budge an inch.

However, I have the investment in AM dies and stuff:) and pretty much hooked on a 1/2 moa potential @ 1200 (only a couple of targets and a few rogue rocks...so far. Plus that impressively short flight time.:D:D

I'm thinkin' 9 twist polygonal Pac Nor or Schneider if they make the 9 twist (I feel strongly for the 150-165 class bullets 8 twist is over kill) for the rebarrel.

Are you talking for a WSM or do you have the 270 AM? If the latter, what powder are you using?

I have one and just have not had time to play with it as much as I'd like. I have 500 of the Wildcat 169.5s and almost 16 pounds of WC872.

Roy, my thoughts have been that if the IWK's just don't pan out that with the 1-8 twist 270 AM a guy might have Cutting Edge bullets crank out a custom order which it seem they will do lightbulb

I have both the Win and Allen Mag.

If the 169.5s are from Richard Graves they will most probably be the goto bullet. They will out do the Matrix in every case, unless your rifle simple doesn't like them

My sincere recommendation is to break it in. (zero and load development as much as practicable during break in) Don't waste any shots during drop chart development. The key is conserve barrel live!

You have enough bullets and powder for a couple of life time, if, the rig is used as intended. A long range animal harvesting machine.

I use 869 for 169.5s (99 gr) also for the 195s (91 gr) WC 872 was the "designed for" powder but a lower load densities it burns like an old time locomotive under heavy load.:)

Be cautious of [powder bridging] which is a real eye opener! Stay away from using any course stick powder and heavy bullets. I did and it was not good!

US-869 is too slow, but from recent reports of changes in Retumbo and H-1000, it may be faster than it was, for 150 class bullets. Load got to the point where pressure did not increase and velocity did not increase with the light bullets as powder was increased. Noise was was more impressive though.

I use 7828ssc for 140 and 150 Noslers. Absolutely great velocity and accuracy. Poor bc though.

I'll try the 160 grain projectiles with ssc and 869 this spring.

I have over 900 rounds through mine and is still going strong. I've done way to much messing around with it but its is such a pleasure to shoot.:D

Also, I believe mine was one of the first several. Its a shooter alright but I think subsequent throats were better or at least different in some way.

Good luck

Well, I seem to remember Kirby building mine, then asking me to send it back or something like that so he could redo the throat.

I've got about 30 Btips through mine and maybe 12 Wildcats.

I never did group well with what I tried with 872 and 869. Best I could do was 3/4" if I recall correctly (100 yrds).

I'm actually considering breaking the rifle down and making something else of it so let me know if you want a spare barrel, dies and the Wildcat bullets. I'll throw in the neck down 7 RUM brass for free. I think I have 45 pieces roughly.

I like the rifle, but I don't like WC872. I also don't like how you have to set up the dies for sizing. I didn't know there was a certain technique to it and ruined a few cases during the learning curve.

I've got a lot on my plate til Dec this year and just don't have time to play with it.

Me thinks mine was built prior to yours.

He was waiting for the newer reamer when he shipped mine. It shot so exceptional that he shipped it without the mod. And it is a screamer. Even now. My only two shots, on paper, at 1100 were 3 inches apart, horizontal. Nearly brought tears to my eyes.

Sizing die set up was a real challenge for me. It a while to get it as I suppose it should be. I'm no for certain, even now, but it sure shoots good.

Mine is built on a Rem 721 action (my dad's rifle). Same as Rem 700.

What's the story on your barrel. Lilja 8 twist 3 groove, heavy flutes, 30" long with DE brake?

Yea, I'll seriously consider taking the stuff off your hands.

I'll then rechamber my barrel to 270 WSM and make a Speciality Hand Gun out of that sucker. I have all the stuff. except a stock. This will be my everyday pack rig for scouting, hiking, wildlife photo treks, hoping for the occasional woof.:D

Keep in touch.

There is always a velocity vs BC range that just does not deliver but the 165 Matrix delivers more at the target at the extremes of it's effective range, but on large game like elk it just flat puts more on them period no matter the range.

Here's an example of my buddies 270.

140 VLD @ 3050 fps. At 800 yards at 0 elevation it delivers 887 ft lbs at a velocity of 1690 fps, 18 moa of elevation and 3 moa of wind.

165 Matrix @ 2835fps. At 800 yards at 0 elevation it has 1195 ft lbs at a velocity of 1806 fps, 18.7 elevation and 2.3 windage.

You've also added some serious sectional density!! I don't put a whole lot of weight on just ft lbs of energy but the total of energy, sectional density and impact velocity, all those put together and you'll can see the difference on game at long range!!!

Is this out of a 270 AL OR A 270 WIN ?

What's the story on your barrel. Lilja 8 twist 3 groove, heavy flutes, 30" long with DE brake?

It is whatever Kirby recommended but I do know it is 8T, 3 groove, heavy flutes with a bigass break on it. 28-30" long.

Don't get me wrong, if there was a better powder out there than what is available and I didn't have to dicker with the die I'd never consider parting with it but from my standpoint and the changes that have occurred in life for me since spring of 2009, I don't foresee play-time anytime soon with this cannon.
