Long Range .270 Build

Well I loaded some 160 partitions a long long time ago and remembering some of my load mentors telling me that a 150 was a BIG bullet for a 270.

Though I've not tried them, past experience with the 160 partition tells me that the 165 Matrix and bigger bullets are indeed a bit much weight for the 270 to push to get any real gains over a faster 150.

As I stated, I see the Matrix bullets more suited for some type of 270 Magnum. I'll stick with the 150 VLD.

This statement is true. People get so hung up on the biggest bullet that they forget what it takes to drive it at it's high BC velocity. the 270 case is limited to about 60 grains of powder and the 270 AI about 65 gr.

I don't think I'd consider the bigger bullets by Matrix in the regular 270 Win simply because I think you'd be getting over the "benefits" curve from velocity loss. I could be wrong!.....

I haven't shot my 165's at long range yet. But, they produced the tiniest groups I've ever had from this rifle. Bulletflight says they're going to outperform my 6.5x284 with 142 SMKs.

I don't recall my MV at the moment. Perhaps I won't get the high BC at 270? But, I think they will excell.

The main issue I'm going to run into is COAL vs magbox length. And, with the CRF it's a hassle. I don't really want to modify the feeding on this particular rifle. But, I like to believe that I've got at least one high BC projectile if I ever need it.

And, others have reported good performance on game at long range.

Nonetheless, 270Win was a good cartridge long before Matrix.

Well Im glad to see Im not the only one who likes the .270 and that there are some good bullets out there for it. I use 140gr BT in mine now and they've done well on every gopher and deer I've shot, granted my longest shot was only about 400 yds. I've been tinkering with the idea of getting a second to use mainly just for target shooting seeing as here in western Pa there isnt mush use for a long range 'hunting' rifle. And I'll deffinately have to give those Matrix bullets a try.

There is always a velocity vs BC range that just does not deliver but the 165 Matrix delivers more at the target at the extremes of it's effective range, but on large game like elk it just flat puts more on them period no matter the range.

Here's an example of my buddies 270.

140 VLD @ 3050 fps. At 800 yards at 0 elevation it delivers 887 ft lbs at a velocity of 1690 fps, 18 moa of elevation and 3 moa of wind.

165 Matrix @ 2835fps. At 800 yards at 0 elevation it has 1195 ft lbs at a velocity of 1806 fps, 18.7 elevation and 2.3 windage.

You've also added some serious sectional density!! I don't put a whole lot of weight on just ft lbs of energy but the total of energy, sectional density and impact velocity, all those put together and you'll can see the difference on game at long range!!!

So the standard 10T .277 barrel stabilizes a 165 just fine?

What would be best powders in your opinion? I would assume much slower ones such as Re22, 25, h1000, Retumbo, 7828?

I'll chew on this for awhile. I still am not convinced of great benefit yet when we see John Burns videos of cow elk taken at 688 yards with a 243/105 VLD combo whether we agree with it or not.

When a 140 VLD from a 6.5x284 takes a bull elk on video at 925 yards, I'm not saying to myself that a 150 VLD is inadequate from a 270 at the same distance.

I'll have to clock my loads. They must be doing pretty good considering their flight path.

1/4" high at 100, 3/4" low at 200, and a smidge less at 300 (only because I nailed 4 deer at 289, 295, and 304 yards in Kentucky and the bullets were hitting right below my aim point so they are not dropping much at all.

bng,

I can't recall the weights of those things I sent. If 150 and 160 class bullets were sent and if they shoot at all, the 150 class are based on the NAB and the 160 the Ballistic Tip their bc should be close to the Matrix actual bc.

I shot the 140 NABs out of a 27" Lilja barreled Winnie @ 3200. Could be more but simply don't think the winnie was meant for more than that. Running RL-22.

It the Matrix offerings would stand up to the 270 AM rigors I'd be on 'em like ugly on an ape.:)

I've got the BT's at 160 gr class, I have a bunch loaded and ready to rock n roll but between looking for wolves, wind and my time off I haven't had a quality day to take them out at range but they are sitting on my wifes counter and I'm sure she'll soon provide the motivation to get rid of them :D

I'm shooting the 165 Matrix sub MOA for 5 shots including cold bore at 1435 yards in my WSM so I think I can run a very good BC comparison between the two if I can ever get a day!!

So the standard 10T .277 barrel stabilizes a 165 just fine?

I haven't measured the bullets and calculated stabilization.
..or tried them long range or on game yet.
I simply ran out of time before hunting began and had plenty of dope on other rifles.

But, they were definitely clover-leafing at 100yds out of my Shilen 1:10 twist FN M98 Mauser 270 Win. That seems to imply that they were stabilized or the harmonics were just right. I beleive I was using h4831sc, cci br2 primers, and nosler brass. Velocity was lower than hoped for, but never got up to any signs of pressure. So, I intend to try another ladder.

I'm cautiously optimistic and will wring them out as time permits.

There are of course multiple successful strategies for mid/long range including lower velocity with higher BC and lower BC with higher velocity.
It's nice to have options.

The good news is that they can both be successful in the right circumstances.

Everything we shoot the Matrix out of is a 1-10 twist and they do fine, I'm at 6000ft elevation which helps. The 165's should do fine at lower elevations in a 1-10, when I ran the numbers they were OK. I shoot the 175's in a 1-10 twist 270 WSM and they are stable at my elevation but I would guess they might not be lower.

Well if I choose to try some, I'm going to try H1000, Ramshot Magnum, Re22, and maybe even Retumbo with such a big bullet. I'm thinking as full of a case with Retumbo as I can get in there and compress it. Will work up of course.

VV N165 and 170 may be options as well.

I don't have much room to keep and use many powders.
So, I just went with what I had on hand.

I'm at 500ft and no problem stabilizing 165's with 10 twist.
