I am looking to rebarell my 30-378 weatherby and i am undecided on weather to recamber in another cal. I have a 338 am that should be done very soon , built by Kirby. So with this 30-378 I would like to rechamber and rebarel in a differant long range cal

So I am looking for suggestions and what it wounld intail in making the switch. i realy like the 30-378 but would just like to try something eles.

Thanks

Also I do all my own reloading so widcats are not a issue

How bout a 300-338 Lapua Magnum?

FLAMING DEATH!!

I have one and it's a lot of fun.

Reamer is on the shelf. no turn. Just squish the necks and you'll be reaping the benefits that $5.00 a round brings every time you yank that trigger!gun):D
Babies cry and mothers fall to their knees looking to the sky pleading "why God" when I drag this thing out. Especially when you set it up for 115 and 125 grain bullets. 4375fps on a 30" tube according to the chronograph at the COR-BON ammunition plant test tunnel.

I also have a 338 Lapua Magnum in AI if you want something bigger yet equally stupid!

What i am thinking is that this build would be a carry rifle rather than a 20 pounder. I just don't know what it takes to change the bolt face to work with other cals. I want something for the 500 out maybe 1000 yard range on elk size game. The 338 AM will do anyting i want beyond this range. I guess what I am asking is what would be a practial consideration for the 30-378 accumark reciever and what my options are.

But on the other hand making babys cry and mothers reach for the heavens sounds cool but just a little dramatic for me, I just like to shoot !!

Considering your bolt face is set up for the largest of the "sane" boomer class of magnum calibers your options are going to be a bit limited.

Unless of course you want to either bush the bolt face or obtain a different one, but then your left with a magazine box large enough to accommodate a school bus, yet your parking "little" SUV's in.

At some point what is possible becomes overshadowed with what's practical.

so it seems that the 30-378 reciever will be to large for something like the 338 lupua necked down to 7 mm , I Am correct in thinking this is not the best suited reciever. And I may be better off selling and starting with another reciever.I was hoping to keep cost down a little

Well hell, don't stop there, go to 6.5mm and shoot 90 grainers!:D

I think you'd be ok, I was worried you were talking about stepping down to a 6.5-284 or something.

jde512, I think your 30-378 is more than enough at 500 to 1000 yard range on elk size game.

I realize the 30-378 is good to a 1000+ Yards as I mentioned in first post I just would like to try a differant cal for a change and was trying to figure out what would work with this action, the 30-378 preforms very well at a 1000 yards

I think the 7mm-338LM would be interesting. Just order your barrels two at a time.

Would love to hear how it turns out.

Good luck.

im not sure if its possible, but could you do a 7mm-378??? just neck down the existing 30-378 cases, would be the same everything just new barrel, sizing die and projectiles...

the heavy 7mm projeciles are much better (higher SD and BC) for LR work than the 30cal offerings...
