New Gun...Shooting Tomorrow!

Thanks guys. I'm light in the wallet myself. This setup was about as pretty inexpensive. I spent $850 on the gun. I wanted it in a LH model so it was an extra $200 for Savage's custom shop to build it. I spent $100 on mount and rings. $229 on the scope. $89 on the bipod. I'm going to have to put an adjustable cheek piece ($55) on it, and I want a rear monopod ($50) also. The grand total $1373 when finished. Not too bad, right?

When I grow up I would like to have Fifty make me a Raptor in .338 Allen mag.:)

I want pictures when you are done with all the mods. I want to see how you do it and what it looks like, if you don't mind.

this thread just reinforces why i like savages so much! i almost bought the same gun but went the custom savage .300wm route instead. a friend of mine bought the same savage you have 6 months ago and it consistantly shoots about .25 moagun)good shootn to ya!

I'm sure you will enjoy your new Savage,I have a Pre-Accutrigger 110FLP 300WM and like the way it has always shot. I also just ordered another from the Savage Custom Shop, but it is a 25/06. I should get it in 2-3 more weeks.

I hope this pic works. I'll take pics of the gun when it's finished, Tank. I'm starting to reload soon. I've got brass, primers and powder. I was thinking about using 168 or 175 grain SMKs, any opinions? Any other bullet ideas for paper punching? Load, if you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for your custom Savage?

That 175 SMK is a good bullet, I shoot it in my 308. With your 300 WM you can shoot it, but you will also do well with heavier bullets. The 180's have a little lower BC than the 175, but jump to the 190 or 200 and they will have .533 and .565 respectfully. Either one would probably do well, I think if it were me I would be more inclined to try the 190. That's a great weight in the WM.

+1, but I would also consider the 210 Berger, 210SMK, and the 208 A-Max. The 300WM is a great platform for shooting these heavier bullets and all three have BC's between .631 and .648. I would really consider these and depending on where you hunt could make it an honest 1000yrd deer rifle. You can push the bullet to 2900-2975fps and that will actually get you to 1500yrds for paper and 1200 yrds for deer. It stops a little short at 850 or 900 for Elk.

I will caution you to not use the 168SMK for long range work. It is a known fact that once the bullet goes subsonic they will tumble. If you want to shoot a 168 then it is advisable to use the 168 A-Max, 168 Berger VLD, or the JLK bullets. They can transition more easily and stay on target.

I currently use a 300WSM with the 208's. I can get to almost 3000fps using Reloader 17. I am going to try Mag Pro from accurate this time around with the new to me barrel I have on it now. H4350 should also get what you need for velocity also.

What load were you using when you shot that group?
