Overall best 6MM cartridge to consider in 2026

6mm ARC? In a bolt gun like the Howa mini action, you can probably run a 105gr Berger VLDH at 2750fps with a nice short barrel and minimal recoil. Suppresses very nicely as well. I have one in an AR platform and shoot the 105s at 2605fps. Very economical to shoot and is plenty for a deer. Just a thought. Otherwise if that doesn't work for you I'd vote 6 creedmoor.
I had the opportunity to shoot a 6mm ARC that was built on an AR platform. I was totally impressed upon the accuracy and with the authority that this little round had when hitting steel at 300 yards. And… there was no recoil whatsoever. I really am not an AR guy, but building one of these keeps running through my mind every so often. The guy who owns the AR doesn't shoot his rifles much, and swaps them out frequently. I'm hoping he is going to part with his ARC, because I will own it.

You will love it. I picked up an 18" med Palma steel 6gt on an NBK and it is my new favorite to grab and shoot. It will fling a 108 Berger at 2820 using rl15.5. Pretty awesome little rifle.
Here's from a 6 GT at a 1000yd benchrest match this past summer - expected to be a new tactical record. To make it even more impressive, it was shooting new brass and off bipod! Although from an excellent shooter - not me.

Hard to go wrong with a 6 Creedmoor with a 7.5 or 8 twist barrel. Factory ammo is crazy accurate, easy to find. Reloading it is the easiest I have ever done, no matter what powder or bullet you use. I shoot 970 yards and it is super accurate for me. At 500 yds, I shot a 2 1/2 " 5 shot group; and at 970, I've done about a 6" groups. Those are with my reloads, too.

Here's a 10 shot group with my 6bra from last weekend. The bra is so easy and super consistent

Great cartridge, there are so many cartridges out there burning too much powder for little result. This BR case in 224 is just about maximum case to bore ratio for me. I have read the 220 Russian case was designed in Russa as a deer cartridge, cheaper shooting, less carcass and skin damage. On many occasions game will run a fair distance away then stop and look back giving more time to make a more accurate shot.

I have a high power match rifle built on a 1990s M70 Classic Stainless, with a 26" Lilja .243 Winchester barrel with 1:7" twist. The barrel is set up for the Sierra 107gr Match Kings. It will shoot 1/2 MOA out to 600 yards (from a bench, or prone, with a scope). It shoots almost as well with Federal Premium 100gr Game King boat tail spitzer factory loads. I think a 24" CF barrel on a blueprinted M70 Stainless Classic action chambered in .243 Winchester with a 1:7" twist is a good starting place for a 6mm hunting rifle for use out to at least 600 yards), and the 90 gr TGK boat tail will certainly work on deer out to 400 yards with a flatter trajectory.

Obijohn, a 6 Rem AI with a 10 twist shoots the 95g Ballistic tips at 3550, on a 26" barrel, 80g TTSX at 3800 both using R#19 or IMR 4831. There are no flies on a 26" 243 Win, 8T using 105g Bergers at 3175 with R#26 with CCI 250s.

I shoot a 22bra as well and it's a fantastic cartridge and very impressive with those high bc 224 bullets. I'd like a bra or dasher in 20
Cal, while over bore slightly the ease of tuning a br vs a 223 variant is just incredible

It really is a fantastic little cartridge. My biggest complaint is that is uses the PPC case head and therefore it's limited in the number of bolt rifles available as compared to something with a .308 family case head. But in AR platform the options are endless. My 6ARC is built on an AR platform. Suppressed there is nearly no recoil. I recently took a buddy who is new to guns and his two boys out shooting. The boys were recoil shy due to being started on things like a .308 or .300 win mag. And one had been scoped by a rifle at some point. Talk about starting off in the wrong foot. I pulled out a suppressed .223rem bolt gun first and once they got used to that rifle I pulled out the 6ARC. Once again they were hesitant to try it but with a little encouragement they realized it was easy to shoot and they were soon ringing steel with authority at 400 yards.

Love the looks of the 6GT. I had a medium Sako gathering dust so having a 6X47L done on it simply because I have everything for it already. Otherwise, I would probably be doing the 6GT. If I had to go with a factory rifle I would go for one of the Creedmores just because of availability of rifles and ammo.

I'll have to jump on the 6 BRA bandwagon, too! I love mine…shooting 108 Berger Elite Hunters, H4350 and the Lapua brass isn't even breathing hard at 2860 fps. Accurate as I could ever hope for. 👍
"BRA", bench rest Ackley?? I think I read about this on the Handloader magazine a few months back.
