Plenty of fat bears in coastal NC but they are fairly expensive to hunt. I've considered it a few times, but I really don't "need" a giant black bear. I've got a few 300lb bears mounted now.

Have a friend in NC a farmer....no problem him shooting a 300 lb. + bear every year.....thay tear up his farm pretty good if not kept under control....

We have some big ones here in the North GA mountains. Not allowed to shoot if the Sow has cubs. I ran into a Sow one hunting season and could not shoot because she had two cubs. The Game Wardens knew she was in the area and said was at least 550.
Two years ago next to our Shooting club in West GA a Bear was taken out of season that weighed 500+.
In 2017 a Bow Hunter killed a 673 lb Black in Rabun County.

Yes we get some jumbo bears here in Pa. I'm kind of late to the game of bear hunting as I have only been going the last couple years without success yet.
I have received some assistance from a couple members here in Pa about some better areas that I will be hunting this year.

Your going to have to recognise the difference between a Florida Black Bear and any other Black Bear down here in Florida. Ocala was a hot spot back in the 70s. But that's a while back. That is a monster! 880 lbs! That's a way to humbler the guy that got the 400 lber...(although he did get it with a bow :)) There have been a couple black bear attacks this year, one in Idaho not too long ago. That one was a hunter that got near a sow's cubs. I've heard black bears can be as dangerous as Grizzlies. It said Dolly Parton's cousin!

Most of our black bears are about 200 on average. 300 would be a pretty big one, but they can get up to 500 lbs. easy. I think I would feel comfortable with my setup to about 400 lbs. What do you use on those bears?

I know of 3 in San Bernardino National Forest that were over 600. I have photos of them. A buddy of mine ran hounds. One over 700 by a dump. I used to see a lot of bears on east side. I heard in they 1950's the dump trouble bears from Yosemite there. I saw all color phases. Blonde, red, brown and black.

Many Black Bears are shot in some pretty thick brush at maybe 150 yards. My last was taken with a 7.62 x 39 with a 154 grain Silver Bear HP. But the 30-30 with 170 grain core lokt has proven itself over time. YMMV.
