.277" 169 wildcat bullet

I'm going to go wayyyy out on a limb here but what I think your saying is Kirby uses a 1-8 twist in his 270AM :)

The three guns Grouper was talking about are all 1 in 9 twist 5R Rock Creek bbls. According to Kirby, that twist is plenty fast enough for the 169.5s even at moderate speeds , which proved out with the great accuracy of the three guns mentioned!! ------ RHB

I agree that 1 in 9 is sufficient. Paul @ Wildcat bullets is shooting the new 169.5s out of a 270 WSM @ ~2900 and is having great success.

I and others have the 1 in 8 3 groove bbls and thus the rub. I'm coming to the conclusion that the 3 groove barrel is a great idea if one can get a 170 class bullet with a jacket sufficiently robust to stand up to the rough treatment.

There has gotta be a way!

Roy, I believe it would be much easier to just get rid of the three groove bbl and get something put on that doesn't damage the jackets so bad because of Land width !! It just seems like gouging three big, wide trenches into a bullet jacket couldn't be that great for any bullet jacket no matter how thick and tough they are ?? Of course I'm probably wrong about that as usual !!

RHB,

I don't think you're wrong just not as hard headed and obstinate as I am:)

I've pushed the following bullets to failure:
Any Wildcat offering.
Berger groups increased with increasing velocity.

The following bullets cannot be pushed to failure:
Nosler NABs and BTs
Sierra SMKs
Hornady 140 BTSPs

These are low BC bullets, with the Hornady being the better of the bunch. Plus the Hornady shoots along with and possibly a little better than the Noslers which hang will under 0.5 MOA.

Now wait a minute. Are you saying gun enthusiasts are opinionated, hard headed and stubborn as a mule? Huh, never heard of such a thing in the gun world. LOL :D

Roy, there are times when being a hardhead is beneficial, this is not one of them !!! LOL .

If the three groove is creating enough damage to the Jacket that the resulting friction causes the bullet to come apart then I suspect it is doing the same thing to the other bullets mentioned. Just because these bullets hold together does not mean they are flying out of your bbl at their best posible BC and accuracy !! How much jacket material do you think might be trailing out of those three big trenches, causing drag ?? I bet theres a bunch even though they are showing some good accuracy in your gun.

I realize you don't have alot of choices in 277 cal bullets, thats why I suggested the bbl change to enable you to shoot the bullets that you prefer to shoot !!

Ol' Grouper thinks I'm pretty hard headed myself not to mention opinionated !!!!------ RHB

RHB,

I hear ya but..........

The 150 Nosler Ballistic tip has an advertised BC of 0.496. I've shot the drops to 1k at 7 different distances. Actual BC @ 4534' Elev., between 45-57*F, and between 24.1 and 24.4"Hg comes in right at 0.430.

Regarding drops @ ranges, difference in elevation for shots at the same distance were 1/2 MOA or better. However, it was a clear windy day with much mirage. Attempting to compensate for both resulted in horizontal spreads of as much as 3 feet at 1K. Flat unlivable. The windage thing was not nearly as noticeable with 0.7 BC bullets.

Regarding copper fouling, with Noslers and Hornady 140 lead points there is minimal. I clean after about 20 shots and there's very little blue on the first patch.

When the bullets frag the first patch comes out "deep purple".

As far as being obstinate, I visited Harbor Freight this morning and looked long and hard at one of their bench top lathe set ups. I think it was a 7X10.

I've worked out the first draft of a core reamer with Dave Tiff(?) @ PT&G and have a small stock pile of copper rod which should make some decent jackets. The bullet maker is primed and ready to make the bullets and I'm ready to test them. Just gotta get some fabricated.

My neighbor has a great lathe but he's never home and the durn thing is to big and heavy to steal.

I'm also working on a project to enhance the BC of several different 270 bullet offerings. This deal is such a stupid idea that I wonder why no one has mentioned it already.

There is a great opportunity for success and many opportunities for disaster. House fire being one. The most frequent comment this past week by family and visitors alike has been "What's burning?!":D

My problems would be solved if Nosler or Hornady would make a 160-170 class bullet with a decent BC based on the Nosler solid base and the Hornady Interlock jackets. The Hornady Secant ogive and spire point is a great design and their jacket has an intricate and unique design and is made of some kind of misterious material.

Additionally and by far not the least, this rifle has been and still is an exceptional shooter. Kirby said I would like it when he shipped it. Like it is an understatement. I am actually down to shooting 1 shot "groups" at whatever distance.

When the time comes I'll just do a barrel set back and go from there.

Gentlemen,

There is a large elephant in the room that everbody seems to be ignoring. Is there a reliable source yet for either the 169.5 or 195 grain wildcat bullets yet?

I have a 277 AM collecting dust because of the lack of available bullets. I do not want to incur the expense of a rebarrel (say to a 7mm?), but it just might solve the problem. I keep hearing that wildcat bullets is close, but then another couple of months go by without any news. Has anyone got an update?
