Whats the cartridge you LOVE to HATE?

I grew up with the fact that if you stopped by for a visit you were going to get coffee and some kind of dainties etc (between mom and all the aunts and cousins there was always home made pies, donuts, cakes, dainties, etc. No matter where you stopped. Kind of realizing why at age 15 i was 5'11" and 195 lbs and the last time i was under or even near the 200 lb mark) but the house could be an absolute mess... and nobody cared. You came in and visited. Maybe you got lunch or supper too depending upon what time it was. But you were always gladly invited in.

I used to go to my sister and brother in law every Christmas and my wife saw these very athletic and very health conscious people. Relatively small Christmas meal. Then one year my sister goes... I'm going to make a small version of what mom would make. I had to bring walleye fillets (my share in tradition every year), she cooked perorgies, cabbage rolls, beat nicks (beat leaves wrapped around bread served with a dill sauce, mushrooms in cream sauce, kutia (like a sweat wheat soup with honey and poppyseed), corn, vegetables, cooked beans and a salad... plus pie for desert. My wife's eyes were just wide open and she was like... THIS IS WHAT YOU ATE AT CHRISTMAS TIME?????? And my sister goes... oh no... mom would have made way more than just this.

The wife looked at me and said well that explains a lot!!!!

I gotta admit that even though I used a couple of308s last deer season (win 100 and HK770), I was also hesitant shooting deer with the 308.

Growing up a friend's dad had a Savage 99 in 308. The muzzle jump on that 308 for some reason was worse than my 308. His son told the story about how his dad shot a whitetail buck (at close range in the back of the head). The deer went down instantly. His dad unloaded the gun and was just about to unsheath his knife when the buck got up and took off. Every 100 yards the deer would stop and shake its head and they tracked it for over a mile but couldn't find it in the end.

Is there a particular reason folks don't like the 308? In theory it's a mild hitting cartridge, but then what does a person really need??? Now I say this being a magnum fan lol.

You just described the 6.5CM that people hate: mild hitting mid-range cartridge.

I don't like the 308 because it's pointless to me. Anything it can do I can do with the 30-06 that I've had since I was much younger. My first hunting rifle was a 30-06 and I never needed to downgrade to the lesser abilities of the 308.

I had to endure years of people talking up the 308's almost magical abilities at doing literally nothing better than my rifle. They'd tell me I couldn't handle the recoil of the 30-06, that it would beat me up, that it was slow and pointless, that their new design was so much better than what had always worked.

So basically I hate the 308 because it was the 6.5 Creedmoor before the 308 guys got twisted up that the man-buns were doing exactly what they were doing for decades. Could just be they both suck, and each of their cult-like followings go around trying to make molehills out of the giant mountains of the ballistic arcs those little girl guns shoot 👍

There's nothing I'd use a 308 for that a 30-30 wouldn't do just as well.

My latest 6.5 creedmoor (I've built 2 since this thread began). It goes to the local smith this week to get chopped to 16" 😳

Thank goodness my self confidence isn't tied to the arbitrary letters on my brass 😜
I'm a 270 guy (and I know you're not haha) but absolutely from a 16 inch barrel I'd take the creed any day. Just makes a lot more sense.

That's a cool looking stock…what is it/who makes it?

Manners eh1tk, ordered Black Friday came in last week.

Yeah 6.5 creed is well suited to a 16-20" deer rifle imo. If I can get 2450-2500fps out of a 143 I'll have enough velocity for a 4-500 yard deer rifle and I think it will be a hoot in a deer stand (for a canned gun).

I'm not against chopping bigger rounds, I just don't need it at all for this purpose I don't think. Low recoil, cheap, adequate 👌

Yep sounds like a handy little rig.

I may be building it's polar opposite as an exercise in chasing velocity…just won an auction for a 32 inch .257" barrel presently chambered in .25-06 that I'm probably gonna turn into a 257 wby

I'm not saying anything too loudly... I just bought an HK 940 which is the 30-06. I think I needed it because the 770 in 308 has shot a deer now. So it's relegated to the gun cabinet now.

If having killed game is the standard by which they are retired……I hope you have a lot of "retired" rifles! 😉 memtb

Starting to buy too many now. I think for this year I'm already at 4 rifles. Might have to start counting coyotes as having shot an animal.

The wife is honestly wanting me to spend more time watching porn instead of cruising gun sites. Something to do with mortgage payments especially since I never seem to sell any guns!!
