Cotton Ball With Ashes Fire Starter - No Match Needed

When I was very young, my little brother and I tried several different fire starter procedures from a survival book we read. We were trying them in the bathroom and set it on fire. We got it put out long before anyone noticed and long before it reached the house.
I still have a copy of Bushcraft. My sister gave the original copy that I had back to the library "for" me. The nerve of some people. I found it online a while back. It has some really good snare triggers and sets in it. I remember setting up a snare with two small trees, two loops, one trigger in a trail in the woods across the street from our house (small town America). I imagined checking it after school the next day thinking there would be a rabbit or maybe a coyote! held between the two trees, still alive, waiting to be set free. As the Aussies say, Yeahnah... There was a gory mess of two halves of a cat. It had ripped it in half and slung the innards all over the place. I still remember how bad that felt. No neighbors were missing cats and it was a very small town so at least there was that. Most likely it was a feral. No collar. I used a bit too much tree power I guess. I didn't repeat that snare.

If I'm ever in a position that things are that drastic that I need to make a fire using this method, just shoot me and end the misery. A good hack I'm sure, but they always have perfect weather while proving that it works, I guarantee that the weather won't be cooperating when you need it
At what range and what caliber would you prefer?
