2022 Meat Pole

2B. Life's been crazy so I havnt gotten out to scout. Going in blind but I have read a fair amount about the unit. I think I'll stay south to try and avoid the crowds.
I don't have any direct experience with that unit - it's a TOUGH draw, congratulations! From what I've heard from folks that have been fortunate to draw it, there are a lot of deer. Your plan to avoid the crowds is a good one. I'd avoid camping near them as well if it were me. Good luck!

Well the wife is 4 days post surgery after having cancer cells removed for her lady parts. All she wanted to do was hunt deer. Well the doc said one shot no more. No high activity no this no that. So I set her up over looking a small hayfield in a lawn chair and off the tripod. Of course she doesn't wanna shoot any of the lower recoiling rifles she wants to shoot the sister to a good firmed and mentors rifle that passed away this spring, a rem 700 in 7stw. I hadn't gotten the hammer load 100 percent dialed in yet so she opted for the the 168 Berger and at the last range she told me was 136 yards and closing. (I was back checking the bigger section as it was getting dark.) I hear the report of the rifle instantly followed by a loud ballon pop. So I take off running to get to here. I come around the corner where I should be able to see her orange hat. Guess what's not there yup! The orange hat. So I slow to a slow jog and get through the corner and look who's running at me! My lovely wife who listens oh so well enough to know that because she shot a deer it's ok to run! NOT! Hugs were exchanged she told me the whole story about how it unfolded. The interesting part was the land owner was telling us about a 1 horned 3 point and 1 horned 4 point that he had seen on and off. He says every year for 40 plus years there are a handful of bucks that only grow one horn. Well she shot a singles horn spike. She is pumped! So now that she can't lift over 15th I just finished getting it quarter and hung and she will begin cutting it up tomorrow after it hangs. She wanted to have the tenderloins wrapped in full fat and the testicles so that's what we had!

Congrats Kelley on a fine trophy. God has a great plan for you so don't worry about what you can't control. You are in his loving hands. We will pray for your speedy recovery. Again, congrats and keep putting them down.

Super proud of this one!!!! Took this beautiful bull in Northern Colorado on a backcountry backpacking hunt. I was 11 miles in & solo for 5 days. The bulls were call shy for some reason, but I was able to sneak in to 20 yrds and put an arrow through the boiler room. It was an absolute brutal packout. I trained my body for almost a year for this hunt, but nothing can train you mentally for what I went through. This was my hardest hunt yet & it definitely made me mountain tough!!!

This weekend was the official opener in my region. It felt good to experience the "mystical flight of the arrow". @Muddyboots
It also felt good for a plan to come together. I picked the target. With her actions, she told me she was ancient. Ever so cautious, she approached. When anchored, I made the mental calculation of how far this old girl would drop at the sound of the release. I settled my 30 yard pin approximately 2-3 inches under her brisket line. Risky for sure. But I've watched her kind before. For those that don't know, These south Mississippi does are some of the wariest big game animals hunted. Just as I predicted, at the crack of the release, she all but hit the ground. My gold tip entered and exited perfectly leaving a blood trail Ray Charles could follow. However, trailing wasn't necessary, A sharp broad head performing a pump station disconnect generally results in a less than 4 second dash and this was no exception. After the deboning, the jawbone was pulled. Will get a confirmation from our state biologist, but she appears to be 10+ from the amount of tooth wear.
The ice has been broken, hope to get the opportunity to release that arrow several more times this season. 3515F648-31A0-4181-9D9A-2B0F0EDD2763.jpegA8CAE8E1-DB25-437D-9EE0-E1E8804913B1.jpeg
