One of my brother in law's friends built a fast twist 25-06 for the heavy, high bc bullets. I will say on paper, the numbers look real good! He has only shot it far one time, but it performed well.

Back 17 years ago Winchester came out with a 25WSSM. A little better ballistics than the 25-06. Got one for Jill and she shot a few deer and Plains Game Animals in Africa. I wanted to use it for Coyotes.

I know blackjack was doing some testing with the 131 and the 25wssm. A guy at deer camp has a 223wssm and it by far the loudest rifle I've ever heard lol.
I inherited some 243wssm dies that I will probably never use. It was a cool concept for sure.

I used one for an LR 1k matches rifle for a while, great little round in my book and it shot like a beast. Sold it to a young guy in Montana, he loves it as well.

I bought a Ruger #1 in 25-06 with a 26" barrel. My (lofty) goal is to get a 90gr Absolute Hammer to 3800fps. 3700 is probably more realistic though…once I finish my late brother's deer rifle load development for my niece, I'll get started on the 25-06
I gave my Ruger 77 in 257 Roberts with a Bartlein barrel to my younger brother. He just had shoulder surgery and those 115gr Partitions don't have much recoil in that platform.

Maybe as far as commercial rifle makers are concerned but the WSSMs are certainly NOT short lived.
Winchester still manufacturers the 223, 243 and 25 WSSM brass currently. I maintain an inventory of all three since I shoot all three, especially the 25 WSSM for hunting and some competitions. Blackjack Bullets started a renewal of all things .25 caliber by designing and releasing their 131 Blackjack ACE bullets. This provided the stimulus for Berger to design the 133 and 135 bullets which are equally excellent in performance along with the Hammer Hunter solids.
Obviously the .223 and .243 WSSM cartridges have lots of longer range bullets to choose from. Commercially manufactured ammunition can be found as well.
Winchester was castigated repeatedly for their first attempt at making rifles to shoot these short cartridges. Their second try was to introduce a 'short-short' action complete with magazine, engineered to feed and fire these shorter cartridges. These cartridge specific actions failed to capture the love of the general public so the WSSM rifles were sold off at a fairly significant reduction in price through CDNN. The lack of proper engineering through the Winchester organization was at fault. The history behind the company and all their successes could not fix stupid.
Many rifles and pistols are currently being built and chambered for the WSSM line of cartridges by professional gunsmiths.

I like the .25-06 too. It is my go-to caliber for whitetail deer. It is good out to 300 yards and the recoil is light enough for youngsters to shoot without issues.25-284 if you want short action
25-06 if you want long action
25-06AI if you want more speed
257wby if you want even more speed
A lot depends on your bullet and barrel. If you have a fast enough twist to shoot the heavy 121gr+ pills then velocity is nice but isn't as much of a factor due to the higher bc of the bullet. Now if you have a 10tw and are shooting 100-120gr.....speed is your friend.
I'm In no way knocking short action cartridges for hunting by saying this but....... I've never had a big buck walk out and had a long action in my hands and thought "dang I wish I had my short action right now"
I have a 25-06 that shoots 115vld's with a maximum point blank range of 245yds. It's pretty lazer-ish

I have 2.... a 250 Sav and a 257 WM. Both are accurate, easy to load for, and effective... but the Weatherby is awesome!

Unless i die young I WILL at some point acquire a .257 weatherby. The original next level speed demon in my opinion (by next level I mean notable step up in velocity and flat trajectory from the venerable .270 win). Has some kind of X factor or cool factor for me. Wouldn't use it for long range (500+ for me), as my .300 Winnie with heavy frangible bullets just leaves it in the dust for terminal efficacy at those ranges. More of a inside 440 yd (quarter mile) just hold dead on gun, speed kills and she's still going fast inside that quarter mile.

With the larger capacity cases, you really need a barrel longer than 24" to get the full velocity advantage. I have a 257 Roberts right now with a 24" barrel and the rifle is about as long as I want for my needs (a mountain rifle). I am considering rechambering it to an Ackley to gain a few more FPS when using heavier bullets.
I've the choice of MANY cartridges when I reach for a rifle, yet when hunting deer I reach for the .25-06 most often. It shoots any factory ammunition well (and that ammunition is available), is easy to reload for, shoots flat enough I can ignore bullet drop in all but the longest shots, and doesn't destroy half a deer if I get a close shot. I've lusted after a .257 Weatherby but can't justify it. Some of the modern short action .25s are supposed to match the performance of the .25-06, but ammunition and components are hard to come by. The .25-06 would be my first choice.
My second choice would be the .257 Roberts. This is what I would put in a Tikka medium action. It's 80% of the .25-06 and has proven it won't die and become an obsolete cartridge any time soon.
