If you were going to shoot a cow and have a 308 and a 270 which would you choose? I have 150 and 165 grain Barnes bullets for the 308 and 130 grain Barnes and Nosler e-tips for the 270.

I could pull out the 300wm but it's a heavy rifle. I'm not opposed to carrying it because this hunt is going to be from side by sides or quads.

Will be shooting boxed ammo. Been seeing consistent speeds with the 130 grain Barnes just barley under 3000fps. Last time out I had 10 shoots between 2970-2995 with Federal loaded Barnes TSX in the 270. I haven't graphed the 308 yet
If the shots are 200yds and under speed does not matter. I'd pick the 308 and 165's
The meplat is bigger and at 200 yards or under
It's gonna hit a lot harder
Which gun are you most comfortable with

I have killed half a dozen cow's with a 308 using barnes 150's, 165's, and 168's out to 400y. They all killed well...and I would not hesitate in using a 270 with 130 ttsx if that is what I had.

Answer has already been said 4 times but I'll add another. It doesn't matter as long as you can place the bullet in the lungs, she will die and not go far...but I would practice assuming you will need a quick follow up shot. They don't not go down very fast even though they are dead on their feet.

I get what you all are saying about what "I" shoot best. I am very comfortable shooting both rifles. I can pick either one and shoot under MOA. I just haven't shot an elk and I know many of you have killed many. At under 200 yards it is a chip shot and I really didn't think it would matter which caliber I used. If I was concerned I would pull out the 300wm and I still might I just don't want to carry a 15 # rifle if I don't have to. If I was shooting a big bull or 500 yards then I would have no problem carrying the weight of the 300
