Looking for a new hunting bullet... Which one!??!

I read all 97 posts and surprised no one mentioned a scenar. I just put together a 300wsm and running the 155's at 3260. I can't tell you how vitals shot works because I shot a decent buck high shoulder. I plan to do some more experimenting with it.

My bigger game bullet plans are either the 180 or 185 Bergers.

I've seen enough eld's pencil to not try them.

Mike I keep telling you you need to try the hammers. Lol
I was a Barnes guy before cutting edge then on to hammers. Slight differences but they all seemed slightly better than the last. I do seem to see much more inside damage with hammers than Barnes. Maybe the shedding of front as opposed to mushroom.
I'd be curious to see what your thoughts were after using them? Compare and contrast type thing.
I'd be more inclined to try them if I had a reason. I'm sure they work well, but I haven't seen any room for improvement honestly. Shoulders break, animals die. Not to mention I have a couple $ wrapped up in my bullet "collection" I may try some hammers in my sons AR just because but it's just a varmint rifle so I don't expect we see any difference.

COAL = 2.968"/CBTO = 2.277" (.080 off the lands); YMMV.
Yup, my 215's are running at 2810, had em seated long to begin with. I kept shorting them until it would feed from by mags and the velocity, accuracy, and precision has not changed. I'm also testing some Hybrid 208s since I can't find 215s. Getting about 2820 fps same point of aim as the 215s and drop values almost identical to the 215s.

Killed two white tails this week, one at 84 yards and one at 76 yards. DRT. One exit was size of a baseball the other a rip exit almost 4" in length (doe was slight quarter away. Massive blood loss never moved after either shot. YMMV.

I would give up on the 300wsm…maybe change loads. It is more than enough for any deer. I've used 150 gr set's with good luck in 300 Savage and 300 WSM or 165 Barnes..always is good results.

Wow! 8 pages of information….let me try to simplify.

Velocity - what causes bullets to expand…bullets expand based on impact velocity. Most std hunting bullets need 1800 fps to expand. Monos generally need 2000fps. Long range bullets generally need 1400 fps. Those are minimums.

Energy - a bullet has Kinetic energy at impact. As it expands and the animals body is damaged by the bullet, energy has to transfer by doing work on the animal and bullet. Does your bullet have enough energy to expand, break bones and exit. Generally 800-1200 ft lbs for deer at 1500 ft lbs for elk are considered minimums, but this is tricky. Something like a 45 Colt has less energy transfer by driving a big bullet through with minimal bullet expansion. It can work with 45's, etc.

Shot placement - Hit them in the heart or spine and the above info means little. Lungs, liver or close to the heart/spine are where you really need expansion. Double shoulder shots are a hunters favor. It is a terrible shot. You could hit the ball socket and blow the bullet up! They will die, but 3 leg animals go a long way. Shot in the stomach and they don't have a lethal shot on them….well short term lethal. Behind the shoulder and low is the best shot.

So, given that info, I like good shot placement and something like a 170gr mono, 190gr std bonded hunting bullet or a 210 gr long range bullet. The mono should be more accepting of bad shots and the long range better over 500 yards. They all work for what they are marketed for. Some target bullets work well as long range replacements.

Ok, thanks. I was trying to think of a "store" with those initials. I am a fan of the trophy bonded tip and the terminal ascent, just can't find them. Got my deer this year with the short lived edge tlr.
Both were available and the auctions ended around 8PM Central last night. I had both on my watch list but lost interest when the terminal ascent went for $215/250 and the trophy bonded tip went for $110/180.

I think I was expecting a bigger mushroom and better penetration like I have seen with other bullets. It seemed like a lot of the damage was superficial and it was not a clean kill. I will admit the shot was a little high, about 8" below the spine, but it didn't have the effect on the elk I would have liked.
Not saying it couldn't have been better ,but a harder bullet in that same spot, is often not explosive enough...and zips thru with less trauma. But if your not hunting long range, I'd suggest a standard partion or accubond or a light 124 hammer at warp speed.
I'm working on loading the 124 at 3700 in my 300 prc for closer 500 and in type hunting. They absolutely crushed water buffalo in a bunch of testing I guess. The faster the better with that set up. I need to get em in the field and test em. I'll keep my 215 berger and 225 eld loads for long range tho. Hit the ribs and it's lights out.
