How does one go about making sure the buyer and the seller are both safe for an online gun purchase?
How does the seller know that they're going to get the money (before they ship)?
How does the buyer know that they're going to get the rifle (before they send the money)?

Use an FFL Dealer

The site has these recommendations >>> https://www.longrangehunting.com/th...-the-longrangehunting-com-classifieds.199849/

Two-way communication is a key to a transaction; both buyer and seller have agreed-upon terms. I only deal with outstanding LRH members. The buyer and seller feedback forum is an excellent source.

Feedback helps if on a forum. I recommend you speak with the individual too. Had one seller insist on FTF, so I drove 800+ miles, one way, and still consider the trip worth every minute of it.

As far as the transaction, I have purchased two pistols and one rifle where the seller shipped to my FFL here in Oregon - here's how mine have worked.
  1. Due diligence is done before rifle/gun is purchased.
  2. Payment tendered.
  3. Item shipped to FFL.
If you have a proxy local to the gun who can inspect it for you, even better.
Good luck!

So....is this how it works?

--Seller sends rifle to buyers FFL dealer
--Buyer inspects rifle, then sends money
--Once seller receives payment, then the buyers FFL releases rifle to new owner

Thanks, I've always done face-to-face transactions before
No. You can't default place a gun store in the role of intermediary.

You provide detailed description of gun, being correct on any cosmetic or mechanical issues. Pictures and video.

Buyer sends you your agreed upon price., you ship to buyer's FFL. Send tracking to the buyer.

If you offer a return policy it's up to the buyer to return the gun. Buyer would send the gun back to your FFL if it was 4473 transferred to them. If the buyer decides at his FFL he wants to return without the 4473 transfer completed he would pay his FFL to ship it back.

Nope.

Specific terms/inspection period are negotiated.
Money comes first.
Then seller ships the rifle.
Buyer inspects at his FFL
Then accepts or contacts seller about pre-negotiated return term.

If returned, the buyer return ships the product.
after inspection, money is returned.

I have done this several times. It is a lot of risk for both buyer and seller. That said, I don't want to loose my rights to buy and sell expensive things with this great group of like minded shooters. I wouldn't jeopardize that by cheating people here. Post count and sales count will tell you a lot about how "safe" this is.

I always ship insured. I always communicate a lot. I'm more than willing to share my phone number, FFL's info, etc. I try to be very transparent and deal with folks who are the same. I call those numbers and make sure we are on the same page.

My best S&W revolver was obtained this way. It came with a couple nice phone calls about collect S&W revolvers.

My only negative gun buy came over Gunbroker. Pics were bad, call was ok. I still bought it. Finish wear was a bit more than I thought and I had to shim the lockup. That said, that was 5ish years ago and I'm 100's of dollars to the good in that deal which was actually a gunbroker deal with a dealer. I believe they should have posted correct finish % and explained the lock up. They considered those fine judgement details…

Got rid of a lot of stuff last few years. I never would consider shipping anything without payment in hand. As a result, I have never had an issue. The seller typically has far less risk than the buyer. Follow all ffl rules as posted above.

No way I'm sending 2=3K to someone I don't know! And if they try to mess with me on the payment I'll turn the gun in as stolen
let them fool with the law. I have a FFL and have never had a issue!

I have a C&R FFL and will only sell to another C&R or dealer FFL, once that FFL is in my hand, and only to the address listed. In state is another matter.
