Real Hunters?

No disrespect intended the op…but this should be titled "who here is a "real hunter" according to me?"

I shot a deer and even ate the thing last November (well the eating part took longer than just November but…). I'm a real hunter.

some take issue with trophy hunters and say it's not hunting
Some take issue with those who use bait
Some take issue with those who use trail cams
Some take issue with those who shoot beyond 100 yards
Some take issue with those who aren't at least 8 miles away from any road when hunting
Some take issue with those who use anything bigger than a .30-06
Some take issue with those who use semi autos of any kind

all I take issue with is inconsiderate hunting (inhumane killing, not making every effort to retrieve a wounded animal, unsafe practices like idiots shooting into the bush because they thought they might have saw something, trespassing and littering and crap like that) There's enough non hunters taking issue with hunting and gun ownership in general….let's not be needlessly dividing ourselves into real hunters vs whatever you image others who aren't as hardcore as you but still kill and eat to be. Gotta stick together.

On a final note, none of us using such modern luxuries as firearms and vehicles are that hardcore, not "real hunters"…we know we'll eat today whether we kill or not, and we use modern tech to make it easy. There are still hunter/gatherer tribal people who kill or starve, and use bows, spears, sticks, stones, traps, nets, etc…. If one of these types said I wasn't a real hunter I would absolutely respect the verdict. No one on here is one of these…
Hi thank you I don't mean to disrespect any one ether.
My simple question was who hunts the way I did describe.
I do not, judge, condem disagree with anything not the tools not how to not not the weather not the guides or outfiters.
If one feels like hunting in your underwear with a rock well fine with me.
However seen how people obviously can misinterprete easily I should have worded the question different.
I'm looking into a business protection plan 😏

I'll give Martin@Hin some credit - he didn't just make a controversial post and then vanish when things got heated. Other posters have done that, but ol' Martin stands his ground.

I get what he's saying - some hunting methods constitute "real" hunting in his opinion. I've been hunting all of my life. Oddly enough, few types of hunting have made me happier than a good head count in the groundhog fields of PA. Walking the fields all day, in perfect weather, where numerous shot opportunities present themselves; what's not to like? Is that real hunting? I don't know but I've spent the last 50 years happily doing it. And no - I don't eat the little critters. LOL

I'll stand by my first response - "I'm a fake hunter", but I sure enjoy myself. 😁

How many of us are really hunters?
With that statement I like to define a true hunter but also no disrespect to the one's that fall out of this category.
A hunter in my opinion is a person that kills to have hunted.
Hunting means one knows everything about his quarry.
Knows its habits, paterns, where it lives and travels.
The hunter than plans and sets up a rendezvous and than hopefully if he is a competent marksman finishes the hunt.

So again no disrespect for people with a limited time frame, disabilities, traveling to far of locations etc.
These people must rely on outfiters and guides to do to a great extent the hunting for them and they become the shooters.

People hunting the fringes of parks, roadhunters ( with the exception of antelope ) game reserves and sanctuaries also don't qualify.
And neither do drones, heat seekers, fish finders. lol

So how many of us are really a full fledged hunters?
Just wondering.

I read that you did not want to disrespect anyone; however............ I have disabilities, yet I consider myself to be a "real hunter"! I do think that everyone with disabilities can meet the criteria that you have described as a "real hunter" possible. Having a disability does have its limitations/challenges; but not when it comes to being a "real hunter", that is possible by all who hunt. Also I hunt to hunt, but....also hunt to eat what I hunt if I am lucky to be enough to make the kill. And....lastly thank you for the post, there was no disrespect taken, I get what you were posting.

That's not how your OP came off. That burns each and every one of us sooner of later. Communicating, especially for those of us that are older is much more difficult in print than in person. Please don't hide or run off, just choose your words more carefully. When I get attacked here I usually deserve it.

Just like I stated this is not a judgemental post and certainly not meaning to insult or disrespect anyone this one can see if one reads the post carefully before geting you dander up.
There are different ways to enjoy and fill your freezer and all the power to you.
I was just curious how many people still use the old-fashioned way of hunting.

Martin
You would have to add a time line for "old fashion." My grandpa was born in 1893 and hunted rabbits with ferrets. Today that would be considered cheating, but then it putting food on the table. I get what you are saying, but times change and animals adapt to what we do, so they can survive. If the animal recognized me personally, he would know to stand 501 yards away, and stick his tongue out.

I spend 100 to 128 days a season in the field hunting something with a game getter in my pocession. I am seldom more than 20 miles from my home where ive lived sense 1980. Ive given even bushes names ( eg, the invisible bush) from prior hunts, some game has been named too (the dor jam buck) and a grouse calld Moby Dick. Am I a hunter you call it but I do eat 90% wild game.

since I was a boy I learned how to stalk a dear and other animals by tracking them and the signs they leave before the game camera was invented they called me a true hunter no dear stand or blind no scents or urine cover ups to hide my scent or camo and still I got my game, One year there was no meat in my freezer to feed my family while spending the night with a good freind we sat on his back pourch early in the morning haveing coffe looking out over a nice green pasture off his back pourch and a few dear eased out onto this big meadow my freind reached into his house and handed me his rifle and i droped a 8 point buck I thank him and I had meat to feed my family and I dont feel any less of a hunter then or now so who is the huner the person who feeds his freinds or family thats who.
