Montana x-bows illegal

I can appreciate that but the ease of becoming efficient with a crossbow is a few hours. Becoming experienced with Bow is a years long process. Some don't want to dedicate the time and practice involved in becoming a skilled Archer. My 82 year old father is unable to pull his bow back anymore, know what he uses now, his model 99 284 Winchester during rifle season. Even if he could use a crossbow during archery he wouldn't as he feels it's a unfair advantage over the quarry and the Archer that has spent years practicing and trying to perfect his skill. Thank you for your service!
For me, anyone using a compound is getting an unfair advantage. Is it any different really? And yes, my crossbow is also a recurve.

Take it or leave it is all I gotta say. If you want to hunt in our state don't complain. Your general tag is good for archery and rifle so if you are not able to hunt with a bow as per our archery laws then wait until rifle season or hunt somewhere else. It's as easy as that.

And threatening us with a lawsuit??? Best of luck with your attorney. You knew the hunting laws when you applied for a tag. The only joke will be you when the Judge throws the case out of court. That is if you can even find an attorney dumb enough to try the case. Do us all a favor and just stay home. You will not be welcome in Montana.
Leadslinger, Thank you for that kindhearted, understanding comment from a combat disabled vet who hunts with a crossbow, VNPathfinder

Significantly different IMO. If it wasn't they would be legal during archery.
He is probably saying a compound is way way easier to shoot and hunt with than a recurve/ long bow. Totally agree with him. Its just the new kid on the block debate. Archers didnt want compounds with their cams and 80 to 90% let offs fiber optic sights shooing speeds of 300fps way back when.

These archers long bow recurve guys using finger tabs and holding full lbs and full draw. They are archers and the same debate happened. Nobody wanted compounds in their archery season either. But it eventually happened and now crossbows are the new kid. Thats all.

+1

As a Vietnam veteran I can understand where your coming from. Thank you for your service and sacrifice and regret your VA experience.
Unfortunately the Navy and the VA both misdiagnosed my back issues as being muscle spasms... I lived with 4 broken vertebrae and later improperly fused for 20 years. They ultimately caused my T12 vertebrae to break as well. Then, the VA figured out that I had the previous break... They tried to repair my T12 vertebrae but did the wrong surgery and botched the one the did do. The result was that they killed my T12 bone and sent me to a "real doctor" to get that repaired. Most of my T12 is gone now, and I have 7 vertebrae in that area fused in addition to the 4 in my neck that are fused as a result of a neck surgery from when I was active duty. My 7-level fusion has also caused damage to the bottom 3 vertebrae so my quarterly epidurals are meant to delay that fix as long as possible. It will mean I have 10 in a row fused and even less mobility. For those that don't know, suing the VA is not an option even though their treatment (and/or lack thereof) caused my immediate retirement as an electronic engineer.🤷‍♂️ Still, not complaining, I make the best of each day and hunt whenever I can. Sadly many veterans are much worse off than I am.

Exactly my point!

Crossbows have been legal in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan in archery season for quite a few years and deer herds are healthy. They have not been decimated by crossbows at all.

I authored the straight wall rifle for Michigan in 2009 that took 5 years to get passed and heard same arguments on using "rifles" in shotgun zones. I heard similar arguments on protecting "our" animals. Whose animals? The intent was to get more people into the woods. If we don't get the next generation of hunters into the woods anyway we can, hunting will not have a future. Crossbows gets youth more involved into hunting NOW which translates more likely they will be part of the outdoors as adults. Most kids I know that started on crossbows switched to vertical as they got older. Crossbows get women to try hunting and many switch as well to vertical bows. Crossbows keeps older folks that may not be "handicapped" but just due to aging cannot or do not have the strength to hunt with vertical bows. Handicapped folks should be a given. IMO need to stop this puritan opinion or it will carry over into firearms. I've heard folks say rangefinders are not fair, use Kentucky windage. Not fair to an animal you know EXACTLY how far it is.

Its an absolute farce to say vertical bows are limited in distance in comparison. My son and I practice out to 70 yards with fixed blade broadheads. Don't tell me that is not possible. If you are technically competent tuning a bow, its not difficult at all. Further more, anybody that hunts in the west practices that yardage. There is nothing "pure" about using a compound bow with tuned matched arrows, mechanical broadheads which can cover up bad tuning, releases that actually help draw heavier draw weights, sights that typically go to 60-70 yards. Rangefinders. A compound bow is "technology" that at one time wasn't allowed in archery seasons either. So how is that different? Even releases were not allowed since they were considered "triggers". And no, it doesn't take years to become proficient with a compound bow. To hunt? Yes. Animals still have their ability to see, scent and hear, nothing has changed there even with a crossbow.

We only like technology when its to our advantage and what we like to use. Are we now at a point where State Bow Associations want to stop youth hunts to protect "their" animals from youth hunts that occur before "they" can hunt?

Which is happening right now in NY.

I understood what he was saying completely and I agree that compounds are more effective than long bows, recurves. But a crossbow is a entirely different animal. Has a stock, scope, you can rest on a bench sill in a box blind, etc. Yes a Compound has significant advantages over a recurve and a recurve has a significant advantage over a long bow. Shooting any of the 3 types of bows requires significantly more skill and practice than a cross bow. That being said why is it so important to hunt with a Crossbow during Archery? If you're truly passionate about it why not just hunt with it during rifle, muzzle loader, shotgun slug season, etc…… I just don't understand why someone would be hell bent on sending "ambulance chasers" after the state of Montana. It was out in front of the state, they voted to not approve it for archery season. So be it. Move on.

Archery season occurs durring the rut and often it's significantly warmer than rifle season as well. If you are using a short-range weapon like a crossbow (or any other) you are being kept significantly disadvantaged as deer are shot at in the area. Archery season is quiet, seer are dealing with each other not getting gunshots to spook them or other such things...whole different environment.

And completely over advantaged also during archery season with a crossbow. So what your are saying is want a easier hunt period to use your crossbow?

Nope, I completely disagree that a crossbow is a distinct advantage over your compound bows with wonderful newfangled sights that you can use to consistently shoot the nocks off of your previously shot arrows. I used those only for target shooting. My recurve served me well for hunting but I wouldn't take it during rifle season either. Just like I see no reason to take my crossbow rifle hunting. It's not an equivalent weapon! I'm already significantly disadvantaged...why add more to it... If I'm not welcome to hunt in Montana, then I can understand and respect that by taking my license fees elsewhere. I have no issue with anyone on their right to choose what their state does. 🙂 Happy hunting! (At least we're still hunting!)
