Best 20 gauge Semi-Auto for son

Don't take this the wrong way, but I would never get a 7 year old a 20 gauge semi. It teaches bad habits. There is a lot to be said about waiting for the right shot that is instilled with a single shot. Plus I'm not sure you'll find even a youth 20 gauge semi that will fit a 7 year old. If so, it certainly won't be balanced.

I'd wait until he is around 10 or 11. Until then, stick with that 410 a little longer or transition to a 20 in a single shot.

The semi can be single loaded, growing up I had a couple friends that had semi auto as a first gun and they single loaded.

The old 1100's were pretty soft shooting and could be had in youth models. I have a LW 1100 in 28 gauge and it's a pleasure to shoot, much easier wing shooting than my 1100 or 870 410's.

Yep, 100% agree on 28 ga, if ur only 7 and just startN out or going on 70 years and walking up pheasant or quail that'd be a good choice for a rig.If he finds that 1100 Sporting Clay 28ga. with the 25" barrel, Remington it'd serve him well. Not sure why that ol boy so hell-bent against those Franchi 48's , probably the instruction sheet was beyond his comprehension. They are like a Ferrari, made in Italy, weight matters. Got the old 1964 Franchi 48 Superange 36" Solid Rib Turkey 12ga 3" Magnum, 57 years now since some artist engraved those turkeys on the receiver and still splendid performance.

Browning A-5 Lt 20.....best shotgun ever made. My second choice is a Remington 1100 (notice I said 1100) LT 20 . Shop gun shows get a steel not Aluminum receiver.
I started (8/9yrs old) with an 1100 LT 20 youth model. It was great for me with the cut down stock and "short" barrel. We did drill out the gas ports to make sure spent rounds would eject. Used to shoot a lot of skeet with it and birds. When I got older I moved up to a win 21. We used to hunt over dogs and tended to use high base ammo. Recoil was good with the gas gun.

Looking for experiences and suggestions for a 20 gauge semi auto shotgun for my sons 7th birthday. He currently shoots a single shot .410 and wants a 20 gauge. I don't know much about semi autos. I've had a 12 gauge pump my whole life. He wants to hunt upland, turkeys, pheasants and waterfowl so looking for a versatile gun he can grow into. Reliability is very important and the cost not so much! Thanks for the suggestions!
This is nj elk hunter,I have a beautiful 870 rem. Winemaker and it works great for turkeys.i personally feel a pump would be a better choice for a boy of 7 plus he would learn to make every shot count.

But him a Remington 870 or 1100 or 1187 in a 12 gauge. Ounce for ounce they kick less than the 20 and have more ammo available to do all the things he wants to do.

The 1100 LT 20 is a good gun but they kick. I have 2 of them and they are great to carry but I would not let my grandkids shoot them because of the recoil.

We sold many of the semi auto TRI star viper youth model in 20 gauge!! Great guns very reliable and most importantly for a youth they came with 2 stocks adult and youth a 24" ribbed barrel with 3 choke tubes and get this a 4 inch barrel extension that uses the choke tubes as well! 300 bucks i believe was cost maybe 400 don't remember for sure. All together your perfect youth set up!!!! Thanks Tribb. Also a p.S. here you can get very light 7/8 oz. or less 12 gauge ammo or load it your self and use in a lighter 12 ga.!! Truly a grow up with it set up!

Bought my 10 yo daughter a Tristar viper g2 youth model-- it comes with 2 different butt stocks for different lop, and a threaded for chokes- barrel extender to lengthen the barrel by 4" (iirc)

It will use 2 3/4 or 3" shells, comes with 3 chokes ( beretta/bennelli) has the "soft touch" finish and its gas operated with a single piston ( no piston changes for heavy loads)

It shoots cheapo Wally word target ammo up to tss turkey loads great. I actually use it for busting clays as its light and easily maneuverable with little recoil.

My 2 cents on a gun is look at the Franchi Infinity 3. Below is a Quote from their website. I have 1st hand experience w this gun and it's 1st rate. The other advantage it comes with a spacer type system between the action and buttstock so you can adjust comb height and draft (up and down, left and right) so they get a semi custom fit.

"Franchi's Affinity 3 Compact is a short-stock, 24-inch or 26-inch version of the full-size Affinity 3. The buttstock offers a 123/8-inch length-of-pull, to which, spacers can be added. As a young shooter grows, so grows the gun. When appropriate, a full-size buttstock can be fitted to the Affinity 3 Compact.

I have a Franchi affinity 3 inch semi-auto that I absolutely love. It is super reliable and light weight. I paid about $700 when they first came out and now they have gone up in price and have been updated a little. My son loves this gun and wants it for himself, which some day I will give to him. If you are considering the Benelli, take a look at the Franchi's. They have a very similar action and are more reasonably priced.

I'll also endorse the Franchi Affinity Compact. Best bang for your buck in semi-autos and flexible LOP for growing youth.

Beretta auto with the short stock and spacers. Got it for my kids. Butter to shoot.

Just get a 12 gage. 20's are so light they actually kick more. I have a Beretta AL391, a Hatsan Escort 12, I had an Escort 20 and my son grew out of it in a year. I have a Mossberg JM930 for competition and a Stoeger M3K. The Mossberg shoots MUCH softer than the Stoeger which is basically a Benelli; NO comparison. The 930 has been a great Gun, so has the Escort. The Stoeger is weird; the wrist is weird and the trigger pull is weird. My stock does not have an adjustable LOP and it is too long for me and I am 5-8. I Know the Remington Versa Max is awesome, but expensive, my friend has it. I am looking for a new JM 940. If you can get the new gas system, get it. I wouldn't hesitate to get the 930 though. I say Forget the 20 ga. You can shoot light 12 ga loads. If you can rent guns at a range or if a friend has one then compare them side by side. You can get 18-24" BBLs for the 12 ga to help lighten it. My opinions FWIW.

Hi David,

Just get a 12 gage. 20's are so light they actually kick more. I have a Beretta AL391, a Hatsan Escort 12, I had an Escort 20 and my son grew out of it in a year. Took me 4 or 5 years to sell it, dirt cheap.

My Stoeger stock does not have an adjustable LOP and it is too long for me and I am 5-8. I tried the Youth stock and it was too short, and the distance from wrist to trigger was the same as an adult stock which is strange. I wanted the Stoeger to work due to the gasless system, but it kicks harder, much harder. I Know the Remington Versa Max is awesome, but expensive, my friend has it. I am personally looking for a new JM 940. If you can get the new gas system in a 940 , get it. I wouldn't hesitate to get the 930 though. I say Forget the 20 ga. You can shoot light 12 ga loads. You can get 18-24" BBLs for the 12 ga to help lighten it. My opinions FWIW.
