New build. Short barreled silenced. Which round

BTW, I think Proof is a good company that ran into a string of bad luck, and I feel for them! They WILL get it together and I wish them the best! To their credit, as far as I know, they have replaced the barrels that were bad. You can't ask for more than that!
You cant blame the cartridge when its something else.
No blame on the cartridge. I think it's great. My first barrel was indeed bad. Going to happen when you put out as many as they do. I don't put blame on anything but I don't think running a cartridge maxed with pressure indicators is Ideal. Even if the brass lasts what happens when it's raining on your hunt and you shank the first shot? Now you get to play carpenter while you hammer your bolt open, I've seen it a few times now. Good luck, rich. I'm sure I'll still build another SS of some sort.

Thank you! Reasonable people like yourself are a real asset. There is no doubt that 3000' is the upper limit with a 156 in a 20" barrel and you make a good point about water in the chamber, etc!

What you should be concerned with is if your suppressor will handle a short barrel magnum. My TBAC is only rated for a 20" barrel with a 6.5 saum and variant.

3000 FPS with a 140 in a 16.5" 6.5ss will surely save you time on reloading. Should be throwaway brass at that point.

good point, I've never run a suppressor so I will have to look into this a lot more. The whole point is a semi light weight compact rifle that will fit Inside my pack, that will still get it done on mule deer at 3-400 yards. And I want a full time suppressor on it. 308 has been my plan from the start, but then started thinking maybe a 6.5 mag of some sort. Still open to the 308. but your point is why I ask on here!

If you are only looking at 300-400 yards i wonder if you need a magnum.

I've got a 16.5" 260 remington with a TBAC ultra 5 suppressor that I'm halfway through load development on. I ran it to pressure yesterday with a Berger 130 ar hybrid. Found a good node at 2680fps. Pressure was at 2770 with faint ejector mark. The only deer I hunt are coues so that should work for me out to 500-600 yards.

20" 6.5ss with tbac ultra 7 hit ejector at 3000 fps and bolt lift at 3040 fps with rl23 and N565. N565 seemed to like 2950fps but this year I am going to use rl23 at 2915fps.

20" 6.5 creedmoor with 140 eld-m at 2715fps. This is small primer alpha brass and rl16. It's in a Kelbly's which doesn't have an ejector plunger so spotting pressure can be challenging. Bolt click came at 2780 fps so the flat spot under that was at 2700 fps. I have a difficult time reading primers as they all look flat to me.

I think rich averages about 25fps per inch of barrel loss on his cartridges so probably similar to what the prc would be? So maybe get a 140 going 2800fps or so with a 16.5" prc l, which would be no slouch.

Few numbers for you to play with in a calculator at your elevation and temp. I don't know anything about 308's but I know guys love to run them short and suppressed.

Maybe Rich can design 308 based cartridges for us similar to Shawn's terminator line, with ready to go quality dies and reamers and add some more options for us to mess around with.

I'm currently in the process of building an 18" PRC for my dad for the same reason. I've converted him to hunting with the suppressor however he normally hunts with a carbine and doesn't want to deal with a 32 inches of barrel and suppressor. With an 18" barrel and a Dead Air Nomad I can get the overall length of the barrel under 25".

As for performance based on what I've seen the 18" barrel should run approximately 200 fps slower than a 24" barrel. This should put me around 3100 fps with the 124gr Hammers and StaBall 6.5 which gives me 1900 fps at 700 yards per my goal for this rifle.

I plan on doing some elk hunting with it so 130 grain pills might be light, however I wouldn't mind stepping it up to a 7mm. Maybe a 7SS would Do the trick. If it's capable beyond 400 I wouldn't be upset. The 7SS running Berger 168s doesn't sound so bad!! I have a 24" 6.5 creedmoor, and a 26 inch 7 Saum so I'm just looking for something a bit different and like the idea of a magnum to buy back some of that lost speed in the short barrel.

Rich what sort of velocities would you expect to get with a 7SS and Berger 168s or 180s ona 16.5 inch barrel..and Not run up to pressure?
