New project!! .30 LR Rifle

To each their own but i feel cleaning is a waste of time unless accuracy degrades.. if your burning dirty powder VV RL etc. things change fast
I clean every 200-300 shots.
I was watching the Wyatt video where he explains how to mechanize the action so that the CFE 9 kit fits perfectly. I do not see it as complicated, but it must be recognized that the path of the RUM for my case requires more changes than with the two PRCs or 30 Noslers. I am liking the idea of maybe putting it together for LR hunting, and using the CF Proof 26" barrel. Do you think I'll get those 3000ps with the 220gn and Proof?

the machining its very very simple!!! and in the RUM defense you can pic your dies of any manufacturer brass of any manufacturer etc..

if you want to clean that often you can there is no bad juju like most will have you believe.. if the barrel is machined properly and lapped properly you'll be fine.

with the rum and h1000 you will see north of 3100 in a 26" proof

It is good for me to clean every 300 shots or so, the truth is that I do not count them, and I clean a little, not so much, when the group goes beyond half MOA.
3100 is more than what I was looking for, and I love the number !!!, more if I use the Proof and my beloved H1k

I'm new here and was thinking of building a 300prc, mainly for factory Ammo and shooting heavier Eld bullets than my 300 win. I was surprised to see so few recommendations for it on this thread. Is there something I'm missing?

How does the Sherman outperform the other 2 by 100+fps? How is the prc nearly identical to the 30 Nosler? Not sure what I'm missing, but I'd love to see the numbers to prove it when they are all throated properly.
Seems I may have misspoke on the Nosler. I looked it up and it does have a 5ish grain capacity advantage on the PRC depending on brass, when throated properly. Should put it closer to the Sherman. Also I don't know that accuracy is good in the PRC with 225s at 3000, but I have definitely seen people obtaining those velocity's before pressure. On the Sherman velocities, the only thing I can do is link to threads on this site where that cartridge is discussed :

parts list for me for a LR hunting RIG would be
BAT HR SINGLE SHOT
MANNERS EH1A CARBON
28" HELIX 6 hunter plus CARBON 1-9 TWIST
TT DIAMOND
ATLAS 5H BIPOD
The 300 RUM without a dought is the best available commercial/non commercial round made on a mag bolt face.
you get a 113 -115gr water capacity depending on brass!! what other cartridge does that on a mag bolt face?? That's why so many people hate it 😂😂😂 hell it makes "super efficient" wild cats have to run 80k PSI to get close 😁 !! which in turn is hammering on your action and you wont know it until your action is ruined!!

There will and always be 300 RUM haters and that's fine, I like that! I personally will continue to reap the benefits of its larger factory case, factory ammo in droves, brass made from every manufacturer, no silly fire forming for no beneficial gain, brass life as good as any mentioned etc, etc, etc.!! Hell it was made in the late 90's and dudes are still trying to out do it and they just cant stand old tech whoopin em!! 😁

When H1K @65-70K psi( my absolute favorite) is used it will be the king as well as any other powder you throw at it for that matter,, there is no replacement for displacement!!!! PERIOD!!! Remember one can run any case at extreme max and get good accuracy and scorching velocity 75K plus,, but most consistent and extreme low ES comes from a few grains below max!!
So this is where the large case cap comes in. You can lope along a 245 berger @3000fpsi with extreme accuracy low ES and repeatable ELR accuracy from day to day with no stress, where others are strained, using high nitroglycerine content powders! ha ha also when a speed claim comes with a max and then followed by ""But i wouldn't suggest running that"" be afraid LOL!!!
Can it be made in a wyatts CFE9 Of course and They work very very well and they feed spectacularly have for many years ... but in this case where your dedicating a rifle with an 1.250 straight tube 32" for a strict LR rig weight is your friend so add it on, that's why i suggested the single shot throating for the bullet to be outta the powder column and all that jazz! Oh and even when the bullet is in the case a little bit it will still outperform them when all variables are equal!
The 220 Hornadly ELD X sits above the neck shoulder junction @4.003" but i would suggest eyeing the new 245 Berger and the big sierra, when you start reaching sub sonic you'll see the benefit of the more streamlined berger/sierra. Trust me you can load a round pretty dam fast in a Single flipper if needed!!
Compare all rounds with same powder say H1K and you"ll see the clear winner! you cant throw TNT in one and a blasting cap in the other and call it a fair comparison!
All of the "more efficient coined rounds" seam to always have to run a double based powder to attain these "efficient" velocities and are dirtier than hooker on Fremont street! many a 300 rum, 338 edge, 338 ultra with 800 plus rounds of h1k never cleaned and still consistent low ES and scary accuracy out there!!

always fun to play with new rounds, hell im guilty of a cap ton of used once reamers!! but i will always have a 300 rum in the safe!! or TWO 😁
Well I didn't mean to get you fired up but Wow !! Cant thank you enough !! I have been a Rum lover since they came out !
Your words are so true , this is a great Round hands down . Its put over 40 critters down for our family .
Now looking at your parts build makes me want a new one !
Thanks again !

A new one!? You've got two barrels from me that still need a home! :) Next time my wife says "you are gun crazy" I will show her your posts ;)

30-378. Cleaning ANY LR rifle is not optional. The 30 378 is fast and can handle about any bullet you want. Accuracy, in mine, is very good. If you need a set of dies, I have an extra set along with some original Weatherby brass. Good luck!

Hello boys.
I have the following project in mind, and I'd love to hear your thoughts/opinions, in order to make it happen:
Build custom Rifle to consistently hit approximately 1000-1400y, based on .30 cal, and heavy for the caliber bullets: 220-250gn, G1 .700+ BC.
It does not matter the final weight of the rifle (target use mainly), nor the budget, nor the barrel life, if I can shoot more than 1000 is enough.
I have the following components that I would like to take advantage of:
- Trued R700 LA action.
- Jewell trigger
- PTG one piece bolt, with M16 extractor, custom fited to the action. (. 550 "bolt face).
- Badger 20MOA steel pic rail.
- Mcmillan Adj. Game Warden. Action bedded perfectly. Has pillars installed. Supports up to 1.25 "OD barrels. I could buy a chassis, but to start I think it would be ok.
- BDL hinged floor plate. I could put a DBM if necessary.
- more than 1000 220gn ELDX bullets, but that is not conditioning, because I can use them in other rifles. I would like to see them fly at more than 3000ps.
- Several pounds of H1000, but that is not conditioning either.

The components that I should buy:
- Barrel. I thought of a Straight 1.25" OD, 1: 8 Twist, 32"+ long, or the one that arises from the debate ...
- and optical, but does not enter this discussion.

The great question:
Which .30 cartridge to use?
- 300win mag ?, I'm bored with this one, but I have Redding custom dies / shell holders and all the case prep tools, etc.
- 300 RUM?
- 30 Sherman magnum?
- 30 Nosler? (.534" case head)
- 300 Norma Magnum? (need new bolt, .590 ")
- Another 300 ?, I hear you ...

Thank you very much for any valuable contribution you can make.
Regards
V
Sounds like you need to buy a

Sounds to me like you need to look into a Weatherby Threat Response. Save some money, they come right out of the box with the specs listed. Just pick a caliber, it will shoot better than all but a very few can shoot it.

ha ha ha that's not fired up LOL! i say whats on my mind lots of folks cant handle it but i still say it! my wife freaking hates it!
I built my first one as soon as i heard rem was building it and waited for brass!!! I've killed so much stuff with a 300 rum its not really even funny!

those build parts are my favorite top end parts very very good quality!
