Been wanting to build a 7 saum for a bit now and have a vanguard 300 wm in the safe that I haven't shot in years and probably never will. Is it worth stealing the action from it for a build or no? Isn't it essentially a Howa 1500 action? I'd like to but not sure it's worth the time

I think it's worth it, had mine rebuilt

I am in the process of rebuilding my 257 weatherby mag based on a vanguard action. The aftermarket support isn't as strong, but parts are available. Several companies are now doing prefit barrels for vanguard's using a barrel nut like a savage. You can also do a traditional barrel if you like. Your Smith will just need to be able to cut the metric thread the howa requires.

Be direct, build it.

Sounds like I will just do that then! I'll have to start the search for some parts, so when ordering a barrel for it, if it's a Howa prefit will it thread right onto the vanguard? And same with triggers?

I had mine trued, depends just how much accuracy you're after, but I it's as necessary as truing a tikka
Howa 1500 and vanguard are exactly the same action

I've been contemplating rebuilding one of my Vanguards. Does anyone have a line tactical style stocks for the long action? I see more options for the short action. Is custom order from Manners or Mcmillan the way to go?

Check out the stocks vg2 carbon fiber stock. I don't know if their any good but they are light and seem reasonably priced. And Dosh is right about the Timney Triggers, very easy to install.
