Alaskan Guide Rifle

David, I'm pretty old school, and I grew up with Elmer Keith as one of my gun writer heroes. Elmer supposedly was once asked what he considered the perfect cartridge, he answer was something like this......"something that would throw a campstove at 3000 fps". I follow that philosophy, a little bit. My only hunting rifle is a .375 cal., moving 270's at 3K or 250's at 3130. It's worked for me for almost 30 years. But, if I want a "stopping" rifle.....I'll go for more cubic inches! Note my signature line! ;) memtb
Remember the fights between big hat and JOC? Those 2 didn,t have much love for each other. And I have many of Bob Hagels books. Funny what you remember. When I was a kid The weatherby commercial with an elephant with the 460 on it.

I have a browning 71 I am making into a 50-110. A 500 around 2000. What do you think? I have 525 flat nose hard lead gas checked and also I bought some 50bmg triple shocks boat tails. I am thinking cut the nose off in the lathe and run them backwards. Any thoughts?

David, I've always had a curiosity about the 50-110, ever since I read a paperback book when I was a kid. The Winchester rifle played a key role in the book.....Mystery of the Haunted Mine. memtb

I stopped at Gary Preslicks house when I was in Chico. He has passed now. I payed 400 for blanks in 07 for some California English and I had McGown make me a half octagon half round. There is a couple is western Montana that whittle stocks and checker. He used to be the head of the customs department at Cooper. They do guild quality work. My thoughts are a straight classic pattern with an English paddle cheek piece. And of course a good pad. Loaded to the 40k pressure level this will be basically a 458 win lever gun. I would love to shoot a cape buffalo with this gun. I had them turn the barrel at .900 at the muzzle at 24 inches. Seems big but when the hole is a half inch not so big. Use a 3/32 white bead with a lyman peep. The half magazine of the 71 will be enough as the shells will be heavy. Still allow me 5 plus one I think.

What do you think about a NECG barrel band sight? Or would it look dorky on a beautiful lever?

That sounds like one heck of a nice rifle. I couldn't take that out of the house with a clear conscience! I guess that I'm too utilitarian! memtb

Ok guys. I got some good news. The boss wants me to start guiding Brown Bear hunts in our area on the Alaskan Peninsula. Starting this May!! I couldn't be more excited and willing to learn this endeavor. The big bears have always fascinated me.
I have my 375 RBH that I've been using up in the Alaska arctic to guide with. I had to use a 1 type fits all bullet because of the dynamics involved with multiple species and distances involved if I had to dispatch a wounded animal. So I was using the 281 grain Hammer hunter. I now have a 338 RBH coming to fill that roll. Now the 375 becomes a dedicated Brown Bear guide rifle. I'll be pulling the 3x15 nightforce off it and transferring it to the 338 RBH. I have a 2x10 nightforce to put on the 375 now.
I am thinking the 299 sledge hammer for the 375 is the top choice for its new duties. But I'm wondering if I should have a 305 claw hammer ready in the pipe for those times a charge may take place in the searching for a wounded Bear in the thick alders if and when it happens.
What say you guys?
I've made my mind up as you can tell but I'm interested in hearing your input on this

I'd say you have a good set up with the RBH and those hammers would be an ideal choice. And I understand the NXS 2-10 for mid range shot capability. If I already had your set up I would go in with confidence. Lower power optics are nice for up close, but the optic won't play a part most of the time on a real charge or if you walk up on one at point blank range. If I was starting from scratch looking for a dedicated guide gun I would probably go with a browning lightweight BLR in 450 marlin or a marlin trapper in 45-70.

Krieghoff 500 NE double rifle. Instant follow up shot. 570 gr Woodleigh @ 2100 should do the trick.

For a purely bear defense gun I would use a pump shotgun with #4 buck in TSS, the density of TSS is 18g/cc(lead is ~10.6 g/cc and much softer) and it will easily penetrate a bears skull, give you a much wider pattern, less recoil, and ~5+ shot of pump reliability. Guys are dropping turkeys at 70 yards with #9's, deer and pigs with #2's, BB's pass right thru. I dropped 2 snow geese well past 100 yards with #5's. I believe Swamplords on here uses it for browns in AK.

where do you buy this stuff at? I need to check it out.
I also think a 12gauge pump with 3"mag brenneke black magic slugs would work well for stopping a charging grizzly.
