Look around for a used Kowa 601 or 602. I have one and really like it.

There are numerous good threads that discuss this here. I personally bought a Pentax ED65 after doing a ton of research. It's compact and has superb optics in the scope. The eyepiece you select to go with it will make a huge difference. As someone else said do your homework. I bought my PF–65 for about 399 and spend about $300 on 2 separate eyepieces. I looked at numerous other scopes in excess of 1k just for the body and was not able justify spending as much as 2,3, or even 4x that. Pentax is a favorite amongst the birders and I found mine actually from a birding store that sold their optics. Cameralandny.com used to sell them also. You can get a superb quality zoom eyepiece for about $150. It uses the typical telescope size eyepiece and is not proprietary to having to use a Pentax eyepiece. Good luck

Ditto on the Kowa they have some in that price range and up
If you get a chance take a look at the Athlon Ares spotter. Not a lot more than your price and very impressive optic. Also spend money on a tripod. A great scope on a cheap tripod will disappoint everyone. A good tripod helps any scope live up to its potential
I need a new tripod. Suggestions?

Look at the promaster tripods.

You need to post some criteria such as weight, size, pan head/ball head, weight of spotter, twist or snap ring legs, etc. Don't forget your budget too.

For 20 years I've had a 12 - 40x Leupold spotter but I would get a 60X spotter these days. If you're gonna hump it around then it should give you really high power.

I was actually just recommended that scope, and it seems like it really is a good deal for the price. Do you have any tripid recommendations, ideally pack friendly? I have a Vortex one currently, just doesn't seem super sturdy...
What's your budget? Tripods have a huge fluctuation in price across the board. The carbon fiber pro master runs about $200 and then you need a good head for it which can run another 50-100 for a decent manfrotto.
Tripods are also sold a legs or kits. Make sure you understand what you're buying. Here is a nice Manfrotto kit. My friend uses this at the range and for Coues deer hunting.
