What is the most horsepower you can get in a S/A Accuracy International

It's 2.950" not a typical short at 2.8"...I'd shoot a130gr Berger in a 6.5x284 with a reamer built for it and run circles around everything else mentioned.
I agree that would be a good choice. What is missing is the intended area of use and the game being shot. For short range large game, a 358 would be a great choice. For longer range open country deer and elk a 6.5x284 would work well. For varmints in open country, a creedmoor might be a fun choice.

Mostly long bean field shots on whitetail and possibly would tackle an elk with it but mostly whitetail and antelope sized game. I'm sure there would be an occasional coyote. My main concern is carrying as much energy to target at extended ranges.

Long as in 400 yards or 800?

What's the max distance on elk do you think?

I would like to see 800ish on deer sized game. I would have to have the cartridge in hand and see what actual velocity I was getting and what degree of accuracy before I could put a number on elk.. To be honest I'm usually a get a bigfer hammer kind of guy. 338 lapua ans 300 rum are my usual go to for elk or anything else usually at extended ranges. I would like to think with the 156 berger launching at 2950ish maybe 600yds on an elk if the gun was capable of.some pretty surgical accuracy but there is a lot of buts in that sentence. Ha ha. I would need to see terminal performance on some other game and do some post mortem inspections of the type of wound channel caused by the bullet before I would confidently go into the field hunting elk with it.

Also does anyone have experience feeding acklyized rounds from a double stack magazine? Any issues with that? These rifles run an AW type double stack mag. It feeds the 6.5x47L just fine and it has a pretty steep shoulder but juat wondering if anybody has any first-hand experience with it?

Looks like the berger 156 at 2950 from the muzzle is still packing 1329ftlb at 800yds so I think that's a go on whitetails and it had 1654ftlbs at 600yds so that's a possible on the elk. .....would still need to see some actual field.results though. Elk are big critters

No

Short action .338 o_O

Again not in a S/A
What's wrong with a short action 338? Sure a long action and/or a mag bolt face would open up the possibilities for cartridges that give more velocity and help stretch the range. However the 338 Federal is a solid round and the 338-08 AI would give even a bit more speed. I have a 340 weatherby and a 338 lapua and I obviously prefer them over the 338 federal but with what the OP has to work with it's two options I thought were worth a look.

It would do alright, but a short throated 6.5x284 with a 130 would not run circles around a .260 AI if both were in a short action. Would it be good enough? Yes. Would it get the most out of it? Due to being limited on bullet selection, no. The 130 would have to be going around 3400 fps to beat it in energy and have the same wind drift, and would still have a much lower sectional density.

Well, I was too chicken to post here yesterday. Saw your new thread, figured I'd save you some money on brass.
30x284

Oooooh. There's an interesting idea! I hadn't really thought about necking up the 284. Not 100% sure about the OAL with some of the heavier bullets but that is a very interesting idea.

Here's the parameters. I have an Accuracy International AI AT. These for those who don't know these are short action switch barrel rigs with a .473 (308) bolt face so no WSM's, they run a magazine that is slightly more generous than some other short action mags. If my measurements are correct it looks like 2.950 OAL is the max I can get in the mag.
If I were going to get a barrel spun up and my goal was to deliver the highest BC bullet down range with the highest velocity possible with the overall plan being to extend my terminal range by having the highest amount of energy on target at distance within the given parameters what cartridge would you all recommend. I'm guessing 6.5 or 7mm is going to be the way to go in order to balance high B.C. bullets with maximum velocity. The 260 Ackley Improved is the best I can come up with. Is there any others out there that I'm over looking?
West Texas Ordnance has perfected the
25 SAW. I don't think it will have any benefits over the 25 Creedmoor in a short action. There may be a comparison on the 25XC, 25SAW, and 25 Creedmoor soon.

The 260 AI is expensive to run. Maybe a 7mm-08 or 284 WIN if you need that extra case capacity.
