So I bought a 700 LA action no bolt, what to do?

• Just bought a 700 longer action stainless steel no bolt, I was planning on getting a higher-quality boat to go with the action and rifle also having the action trued up. This will be my first Custom Rifle that I have total control over its completion, target accuracy is primary, killing energy 2nd. Any suggestions on what I should do? I have the main stream factory rifles in the main stream calibers like 308 the Creedmoor's as well as some of the more Obscure like 25 WSSM, basically what I'm saying is I'm looking at perhaps some of the wildcat chambeings but SAMMI stuff is good too. I went with the longer action because I don't want COAL issues. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Seems like .300 WSM is 'the thing' for the 1,000 yard competitive people these days? And with the long action, you have plenty of room to seat bullets way out there. Can't wait to see the gajillion suggestions you get here, ha! Have fun with it. Always nice to start with a blank canvas and color it in the way you want.

First, what do you want to shoot with it and how far ? That will tell you what bullets to use then you can figure out what cartridge to push it with.
With regards to "custom" I have always regarded it to mean aftermarket action like Defiance, etc. otherwise it's a rebarelled Remington or semi customized Remington.

Get ya a one piece bolt from Pacific Tool. Have yer action blue printed with all the bells & whistles and you'll be on par with many of the name brand actions out there...

Depending upon whom you believe, some say there is no need or advantage to truing a current manufacture Remington action. Since they are CNC made one is pretty much like the other and they're pretty **** good. Call a few custom smiths and ask their advice/opinion. If it's going to eat on yer craw if you don't get it done then spend the money for the peace of mind.

for a new one go to PTG and you can get one with everythong done to it you want even over sized bolt but then the raceway willl need to be cut for it or just get one off of e-bay used or new there and save a lot of cash

FWIW a friend who is a BR shooter and bullet maker says he would never pay that much for a Remington action. Since the OP already has it he might call PTG and ask if they would true his and fit a bolt. They seem to be terrible at answering emails. I bought one of their SS Rem 700 trigger guards and the slot in the floorplate was too narrow for the follower spring to fit in, but they took care of it.

Since the OP already has it he might call PTG and ask if they would true his and fit a bolt. They seem to be terrible at answering emails. I bought one of their SS Rem 700 trigger guards and the slot in the floorplate was too narrow for the follower spring to fit in, but they took care of it.

PTG are very slow and there custom service is not up to par but they do have what I need sometime and I will use them

I do not know many Benchrest shooters that would trust PTG to true there actions most now a days will go to a custom action for benchrest work in the past Remington actions were the most used actions but they were sleeved after blueprinting and truing> I still shoot a old remington 40x sleeved action in 6mm

Do yourself a big favor before you buy anything else. Get a quote on the cost of the bolt. The cost to true the action if needed To fit the bolt if needed. You might be surprised at the total cost Considering you can spend about a 1000 for a custom action ready to go. I just bought a PTG bolt to put in a build 700 long action. For what I had in it and the extra smith labor. I came out better selling the action and bolt to a member here and buying a custom action. Cost was very close to the same

That was his comment about Remington actions for any purpose. He prefers the custom actions as mentioned in your comment. Not sure what type of target rifle the OP has in mind, but I suspect that it's not benchrest since he's gotten a long action. The nice thing about the custom actions is that most are available in some form with the Remington footprint.

I was going to suggest a regular 284, but I think Longshot284 is giving a good answer to your question. Berger 7mm over 180 grain run a G7 of .345+. You have to jump up to 215 grain in 30 cal to even get close and just thinking about that hurts my shoulder and makes my whole arm tingle from the nerve damage.

Don't listen to the naysayers that are giving you grief over building out your 700 action instead of buying fancy "custom". Get yourself a good fitted bolt from PTG and get to building.
