Sooo, long story short I had put together a savage short actioned rifle in 6mm BR with a shilen select match varmint taper bbl as my egg shoot gun back when I lived in Massachusetts. Fast forward 3 months and a lifelong dream realized, I live in Northern Idaho and my rifle needs have changed. Looking to make this into a 10lb long range deer and possibly elk gun. Ive got some lighter guns for the job and some heavier guns as well, but I'd like to change this one into a western long range thumper. Since I'm limited to a short action, I was thinking 7mm or 300 wsm. Any suggestions would help as I've never loaded for either of these. Also looking for suggestions on where I could source a pre cut savage bbl for whatever caiber I go with. Another shilen select match will be 3-4 months out which doesn't work for me as the season is just around the corner.

Thanks in advance,
Nathan

Hi Nathan....I just moved from North Id. I lived in the C'da area for 40 years. I have a brand new take off 300 WSM barrel for a Savage model 16 if you are interested........rich

I believe it is the small shank. Was a .308 at birth.
Small world, I'm a 3.5 month resident of CDA as we speak. LOVE it here. Just got off the lake a few mins ago. was a great day out there. So I assume that's one of the early small shank wsm's? What does she have for a round count, load data? Was looking or another shilen select match but the time frame from northland shooters was too much to make this season. Let me know the details on that one or if anyone else knows where I can get a match grade bbl in in a month or so.

Thanks, Nathan

To be quite honest, I wish I was still their. BEAUTIFUL place. What I have is a large shank. You might try Bughole rifles for a barrel in stock or maybe Bruno shooters supply. Also, some of the manufacturers might have one in inventory. Try Lilja, or Krieger. May be others too.....Rich

No kidding? I just talked to him like 2 wks ago and though I was asking about shilens, I would have thought he would have mentioned the criterion ones if he had them. I'll have to look them up again.
Thanks

Toecutter,

Since it is a small shank 6mm BR with a good barrel. I would just keep it as is for a P dog and song dog slayer. Plus, I'm sure you could find a few egg shoots or 600 yard F-class in ID.

Use one of your heaver rifles this year or find yourself a 300 win mag configured as you would like.

I shoot a 300 WSM Savage model 12 with custom barrel with longer throat for the 210 Berger VLD. That can be a good setup. Have heard of a lot of guys using the 300 WSM on a small shank Savage, but I believe Savage went to the large shank on the 16 and 10s for a reason....

Good luck.

Hmm, good advice there, Im on the fence about these matters in a big way but your advice rings true. Got a minty Noveske dream of all dreams AR in the safe that I never really shot. Might have to put it up for sale or trade and see what I can do. Luckily I've got some options in the safe, but it makes me sad to see the 6br just sitting there.

Thanks again

I agree with this advice.

Nathan, Did you shoot Eggs at Woodcock/New Bedford or Maville, RI? I'm from MA and an avid Egg shooter for many years, we have likely crossed paths,
Art Caputo (200/300yard) 6mmAR and 308 Milspec 700).

Small world Art! Yup, I lived in Dartmouth and traveled the area on weekends for the different egg and lollipop and silhouette shoots. Roy helped me put on that shilen barrel as a matter of fact. Ive definitely seen your name on the roster before and I'm pretty sure you know my uncle Terry who lives in Milford. We were shooting most all of the matches together.
Thanks for reaching out, good to hear from you.
Nathan

TC - if you decide to keep the 6BR set up as is, I have a 270 WSM model 10 I'm looking to unload. It's large shank. If Elkaholic gets you a good price on his barrel, you could swap out my 270 for his 300 WSM barrel and be set for under $450-$500 I'm sure.

Mine is large shank, staggerfeed (CRF), accu-trigger, with a wood stock. Let me know if you're interested and I'll get you pics and a price. It's priced competitively for a wood stocked rifle. I also have some NIB Hornady 300 WSM dies still sealed I could work in for you. I decided to cancel my 300 WSM idea.
