I believe I'm going to try a WSM

Yes the 7wsm is the longest of the bunch. Corresponding to Slightly more case capacity... for a while I was fire forming 300wsm brass down to .284 and my current load way over pressure. Once I ran into my 7wsm brass and bought a life time worth, I tinkered with the load and found I had more room to work with.

as far as building on a long action, yes. That's what I did with my 6.5-284 and for all practical purposes, the 284win is a short magnum... the only reason I built a 7wsm on a short action is I burned the barrel in my 270 wsm Finnlight... the most accurate factory rifle I have ever seen... but I got carried away and shot it way too much.

No experience with short mags,
But I have a 28" proof, and it's awesome! Definitely go 28" if ur wanting it. Next barrel I get changed is gonna be 30"

After someone here gave me the idea, i am thinking about building a WSM on one of my Ruger MKII LA. I like that I could seat the largest. .308" bullets long and the COAL wont exceed 3.30" which will work great for me.

Is it even possible to get a WSM barrel in a Ruger thread with the American barrel nut set up? All Rugers are threaded the same.

I have never messed with a .300 WSM, but maybe it's time to try.

If it's Ruger, Olson Gunsmithing in Plains, Montana will make it happen. I had difficulty finding a gunsmith who would work on my Ruger 77s, he likes working on them. His prices are good, his work is impeccable, and the turn-around time is reasonable. He likes Douglas barrels, but will fit up anything that you would like with the contour that you would want. He's worked on a couple of Rugers for me, and he has built two Ruger 77s in .270 Ackley Improved for me. Dennis is not a "techi" type of guy, so not a whole lot on the net about him and no web page. If you've questions he will take the time to answer, and....he's also familiar with the "Sherman" cartridges if you would like to go that way; Sherman cartridges are a good way to go if you want a lot of bang for the buck. And "NO" I am not the advertising department for Olson Gunsmithing, just passing along a good reference for you.

I jumped in 6 months ago with a fierce fury in 300wsm. Great caliber and a nice rifle to

Have 3 308s already so components was not a problem

Like some posters said I think the 7wsm is more useful for my lineup of calibers (have a 338win for bigger game) and the .284 projectiles are really versatile

I've got two 300wsm's now. You won't be disappointed

My 31" barrel blank cost the same as the 28" blank I had originally purchased (from Red Hawk Rifles) for my 338 RUM. Go with whatever length you want!
I've been talking to a helpful fella. He has convinced me to go 7mm. I've had two Rem Mags and a 7mm-08, and when I think about it, they never killed less dead than my .300's haha

I've done some reading, and everyone seems to think the SAUM line was more efficient than the WSM's. The major difference I see, is the RCM, and SAUM's have a 30° shoulder and the WSM'S have a 35° shoulder. What happens if you change the shoulder on the WSM to 30, or even split the difference, 32.5 ?

I stuck a 7mm WSM in the mag on my Ruger. COAL is 3.00" and I have plenty of space to work with.

What would happen if you changed the WSM's shoulder from 35 to 30 or split the difference? Then you would needlessly spend quite a bit of money for a custom reamer and custom dies. IMO you would not gain a thing.

I have three Rugers, two SA and one LA. I had my local gunsmith lengthen all mag boxes. Not as simple as buying Wyatt's mag boxes and having them installed but it can be done. Magazines are now 3.1" with the SA actions and 3.470" with the LA. Naturally useable lengths are a just a bit shorter.

Thanks, yeah, it is going to be a .338. I've never had a custom rifle. So I say, why not use a custom caliber too ? It will be used for some hunting, but mostly paper and steel. I'd like to take some road trips and try it at 1k. That is why I'm thinking a 28" barrel.

This Ruger is sentimental, that's why I want to use it. I know a Remington or Savage would be easier, but we will see what happens.

Can you fellas school me on contours ? I don't want a 1.5" bull barrel or anything. My old Sendero seemed about right. Should it be a 1:9 or 1:8 ? I dont see any situation where I will ever use below a 225.

Barrel contour suggestion would be 5...not to heavy and still fairly stiff

Check Renting a Reamer. My Gunsmith does it all the time @ a very much lower price than a new 1. He requires any rentals to be .0002 within spec, I think.
